Does SSRI's CAUSE BIPOLAR SYPTOM OR SHOWS YOU HAVE

Posted by tboybmx on July 24, 2008, at 11:40:50

This is the second time I was told I might be Bipolar. The first time was when I started Lexapro after five days I stopped because I was feeling Paranoid and wierd sensations throughtout body and also kept telling my Doc I felt very Tense and agitated while on it those 5 days. The second time is now I'm Taking Zoloft for Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia, and once again I have times when I just had to get out and buy something then all of a sudden I felt like crying and then it stopped. Another occassion I felt like GRRRRRRR for a while then felt like crying then it stop. Any Info is appreciated.

Might want to post this on the medication board? Love Phillipa

In some Bipolar people, SSRIs will cause manic-like symptoms or full-blown mania IF they are not on a mood stabilizer.

The SSRIs do not cause depression, but mania.

But, honestly, the literature shows that this is a RARE event and the doses have been fairly high. Now, it might happen more frequently in the general population, but I still think it is rare.

This is actually not so rare. I can't take SSRIs for that reason, and at most my diagnosis would be bipolar II. Same with my daughter, and also with another friend who is bipolar. My p-doc will not prescribe SSRIs to anyone with any sort of bipolar traits or tendencies, and he's very careful with that. He says it happens a lot. If not outright mania or hypomania, it can cause rapid mood cycling or at least mood instability in susceptible individuals.

Philippa's suggestion is also a good one - to post this on the meds board. You'll get a wider range of responses there.

Best, Lucie

Actually getting more responses here none on the med post....Well the psych gave me seroquel to take but after the last symptom (rapid speech early in day then feeling like GRRRRRR!!!!! then all of a sudden felt like crying for 2 minutes)...my therapist told me to hold off on the seroquel and wait to tell the Psych about the last episode because she called it rapid cycling

That sounds similar to what we (my daughter and I) experienced with SSRIs. I'm not sure such a reaction is considered diagnostic for bipolar, but certainly mood instability seems to occur in a subset of mood-disordered patients (including us). We have both done well with wellbutrin as an A/D and also for me, lamictal as a mood stabilizer. Been on these now for some time with no problem. Plus, no weight gain or sexual side effects, both of which can be a problem with SSRIs. Hope this helps.
