How often do you see your T? depending on T

Posted by Angela2 on April 24, 2008, at 13:34:56

I am just wondering because I have been seeing my T once a week but I think I need some space. My mom is like, "with your good insurance, you should take advantage and go every week." But I just feel like I need some space and not depend on her so much. Anyone else ever feel that way?

I generally go 1x/wk, more would be good at times, but not enuf $$$ to do so.
I think #1, you should discuss this with T.
and,
IMHO a break IS good. If things going good a week off is good. It REALLY helps me 'find' my non T stronger self again, cuz it kinda seems to get lost sometimes somehow.
So, if your stable and ready, and T agrees, then go less often and/or take breaks.
Thats my thots.
Good luck and take care,
M

Thanks Muffled. I felt sort of silly after posting this because I am going through a hard time and just broke down and cried. I don't know if this is the right time to take a week off. My mom doesn't think so. I'd like to because I have doubts about therapy helping me. I guess I need to explore this more.

I agree that it is something you should discuss with your therapist. Often clients may want to take a break in order to avoid something. I am not saying this is what is happening to you but it is something to think about.

My daughter goes to therapy 1x/week. And she always wants breaks. "I'm fine, can't I skip this week?" I find that when there are natural breaks (holiday or vacation or sports schedule) she is more aggitated and easily annoyed. Her therapist noticed the difference too.

Hi, Angela, I don't know how long you have been with this therapist but I know from my experience that it takes quite a long time to know if the person is going to be able to help you, if you will feel comfortable. I'd give it a few months. And, yes, definitely talk to the therapist about how you are feeling. Good luck! PS I wouldn't give up my therapist for anything but it's been 5 years.

Hi Angela,

I see my T once a week. When she took a three week vacation in February I was doing really well (until I lost my job) and I seriously thought about going less often. I even dreamt of it.

I hate feeling dependent, too, but sometimes I just have to fight the need to be independent and and lean on her a little bit more.

Thanks everyone. I think she is a good T. I've only been seeing her for about 3 months. I'm just trying to understand why I'm not recovering faster. And why do I pay attention to my negative thoughts. ok well thanks for your input everyone.

Three months is just at the beginning stage of most therapies. It takes time to trust the other person and understand more about the process of therapy.

Hang in there and keep talking.

Changes in therapy are small baby steps. Friends and family make notice differences before you do.

I see mine twice a week, and I find it works a lot better for me than once a week did. But everyone is different. You could try it out, see how it feels, you can always go back. That's the good thing about therapy.
