Re: My thoughts on arm chair therapy

I have found for me that it is very upsetting to say the least when I see people providing misinformation on very serious topics, especially when it concerns issues I might have. I just end up starting to feel really angry.

I decided some time ago to stay away from babble psycholgy until the first of the year, but now it is triggering me again because I see "stuff" that I know, as a psychologist, is just not so.

I just want to say that as far as I am concerned, the diagnosis on a piece of paper is not what is important. It has long been know that diagnosis for mental illness/mental disorders is not as precise as with physical disorders. That having een said, I don't try to self diagnose myself and know for a fact that my current diagnosis (on paper) includes one of my problems but not the whole ball of wax so to speak. I am glad that my T only uses Major Depressive Disorder and does not put anything down as a diagnosis for dissociative stuff (very general I know, but I do not want to get specific here anymore). The diagnosis is for the insurance company, and MDD is good enough for them to pay.

There is so much overlap with diagnoses, and various disorders have what looks like a similar presentation, and so I would never consider trying to diagnosis someone on the boards here or tell anyone that they must have this or that. Likewise, whatever one's diagnosis is, in my opinion, how one is dealing with their pain and life in general with the help of therapy is what is important.

I check in once in a "blue moon," but I am not really interested in getting into any heavy duty discussions. I am doing what I need to do in therapy, and my hope is for others to do the same. Wishing you well.

Hi RealMe,

I agree with you that the diagnosis on paper is not important as mine is for insurance purposes only. My T and both pdocs have said so and I believe them.

I am my DX and I am not my DX and I am far more than my DX and am grateful that my T and even though I call her Dr. Clueless recognize that.

I don't think anyone here was diagnosing anyone else, just sharing their own experiences. And experiences can be very different.

I agree with you about diagnoses. My discussion with my therapist was purely hypothetical. He doesn't have the need to write down my diagnosis. And my pdoc sticks to anxiety disorders, which is all he really knows about anyway. What's the point of telling a pdoc something nonmedication related?

My therapist has some experience in the field, but doesn't have preconceived notions or dogmatic beliefs. That's what I like about him. He accepts my experience as it is, and doesn't infer from it or insist that it fit a mold.

It would be impossible to diagnose anyone over the internet. It must be hard enough in person, especially given the narrow categories provided by the DSM. I doubt there's even one "depression" really.

I agree with the diagnosis issue - especially in this day and age of confidentiality issues. Adjustment disorder is a wonderful catch-all bucket that usually works for insurance companies.

And I'm sorry you feel triggered, though I admit to having no idea which thread or what you are referring to. I don't keep up as well as I used to. I've said it before, Babble is an interesting place in which to get and give information and support. But, as will all sites of this type, all kinds of people, with all kinds of advice, come here. Some are very careful with what they write, others speak off the cuff, and may or may not have data or proof, or degrees, or even experience, to inform what they write. I think people extrapolate their own experiences to universal truths - and this is not unique to Babble. I try to believe that each person isn't intentionally spreading old or wrong information but they simply haven't been asked to consider the truth or warrant of their information. In my line of work, everyone is a parenting expert if they've had a child! The debate about spanking still rages, no matter how much scientific data I produce to show how ineffect it is in the long run.

I'm glad you are protecting yourself, as you need to. I think that is so wise and shows a sense of knowing yourself. But I'll also encourage you to jump in at times and respectfully disagree if you see misinformation here. Your level of knowledge is helpful, and one of things that makes this board unique. But do this only if it helps your stress level, not increases it.

Be well.
Daisy

I thought the website you posted was very good muffled, and had some really useful coping tips that I had never seen before. Thanks for posting it.

You're ok. Everyone has their little quirks. You're fine.

Doing good. Busy at work and with my women's pagan group and other UU groups. I am exhausted right now and heading to bed.
