If I don't buy turkey/or clean the house will.....

Posted by rskontos on November 19, 2007, at 15:35:20

Ok, so I was thinking my procastination had to do with if I don't buy the turkey or clean the house maybe T-day and my family won't happen? Or is that just denial...........I am stressing over this as I think it will not turn out ok.........rsk

I don't want company, I don't want to do with my dad, I don't want to make nicey nicey, I just want to be left alone. I don't want to referee anymore at holidays. I don't care, let everyone else take care of themselves, I am just one person not the keeper of all. I have to cook, clean, do it all. It makes me mad. I want to go to Egypt. Or anywhere they don't have thanksgiving because I know I have some things to be thankful for but I don't want to do it right now. I want to just be left alone. I don't mind my sister really. I do mind my uninvited dad. I am not taking his crap though. If he makes fun of me or ridicles me like he did the last time I am going to let it rip. I might just let out the mad one inside of me and let her have a go at him. He needs a tongue lashing. It is not like he lives the perfect life. And if he tells me he doesn't like my food I will give him the phone book to go find a restaurant to eat at. I will be combative this year not docile. I will go down with a fight. Might not be what my T says to do. But it is my new game plan. Ok now I can go clean up the house and tomorrow I will buy the stinking turkey. Thanks for listening to my rant and rage and dribble. Sorry guys. rk

My Turkey day strategy is small but sweet: I am also quite resentful of all the work that I put into the day and the meal. This year, I bought the desserts, and they are in the freezer. I am not making fancy side dishes as I have in the past, but the most basic of stuff - just about everybody at the dinner table will be so crocked they won't care what they're eating anyway.

To make the day fun *for me*, I bought a jigsaw puzzle and will set up a card table in the corner so I can take a break now and then and work on it, without actually running away from the room, which is what I've done in the past (run and hid in my bedroom). This year I will stick around, but will have something for me that I'll enjoy.

And that was right out of my last session with my T.

ClearSkies, I usually make everything from scratch but this year I too am going to buy pies, not making any thing too fancy. I usually make this really complicated dressing with everything homemade but not this year. Last year I created a new easier version and this is what I am making this year. My father may complain but I will not listen to him. He can't cook anyway. Last year he went to Western Sizzler for dinner so he can co there again. My stepmother did not invite him to her families house for dinner so he cant complain what I make right. I have a new book I will whip out or take my dogs for a walk. It is suppose to be warm around 60 so they will enjoy that. My sister probably will help some. Maybe I will spike my father's sprite LOL.........thanks for the support.....rk

Ohhhh, don't you just hate nicey nicey!!!! I am so over that, but it took me years to get to that point. I told my DH that I am NOT doing thanksgiving this year. He doesn't help either. I used to make everything homemade, made incredible table decorations and all. I used to take articokes and baby pumkins and made candle holders with them. It was so cute. But each year it got to be less and less. Now they can have stove top stuffing. I don't like it as much, even my kids love it, so why go through the effort? I haven't got to the point of instant mashed potatoes but if I was doing it this year, that might have been an option. lol Nobody seems disapointed in my not doing it, so that is fine with me. lol I wish you the same luck! Maybe your sister can have it at her house! but at least she helps out, that is good.
Me, I am going to sleep in and watch the parade on TV and have turkey pot pies! lol Well maybe I will put a turkey breast in the crockpot. Good luck. After 10 years of this crap,I am glad to have a break.

I bought a new game of Boggle for us to play. My son's old girlfriend took possession of all of our games, so I'm restocking them.

Oh, yes, and to keep this therapeutic--I am planning to walk away from the kitchen or any of my guests that really get on my nerves and invite my littlest son to play Boggle.

I bought a pie this year. Never done that before either.
I think we're learning.
Happy Thanksgiving,
antigua

Oh Happyflower thank you thank you.....you made me laugh......:)
And that is worth a million right now. First the nicey nicey, then the stove top, and to top it off with the turkey pot pies, I am crying now I am laughing so hard. I am imagining my father's look of astonishment when I set his man-size pot pie in front of him on a paper plate and I take a photo to send in to Martha Steward, oh wouldn't see be so proud, and I will even have a couple extra pies in case any one wants seconds......LOLOLOLOLOLOL. I am still laughing......This was my first deep belly laugh I have had in foreverrrrrrrrrrr.....thanks a million for this.

Now which brand of pot pie is the best to go with our store bought pies???????????LOLOLOLOLOLOL...............I think I will go check out the instant potatoes....Maybe buy a couple of brands.......rk

Thanks so much I really needed this and this is what Babblers are for. I am going to get cereal for breakfast..........and see in too since pot pies dont need that much time.....

Well I am glad you got a chuckle! lol You can tell I am fed up with the holidays! lol I would love to see the photo of your father as he is served a pot pie! Marie Callender isn't too bad, expensive, but better than those 50 cent ones. ;-)

rk..

Happy flower has a good point..She is sick of all this holiday crap and so am I..lol.. we all are I think.. Holidays aren't alot of fun for alot of people.. I would like to go to Egypt on the 22nd of dec and return after jan 1st!! Happy, Happy, Joy. Joy... well,, i am not feeling happy or joyful and I get tired pretending. If the holidays were about what they are supposed to be about we would be just fine. Being grateful?? Well, yeah, we can all think of a few things even if we feel crummy but putting up with all the other "garbage" that goes with it is just too much. I vote for turkey potpies too..Stovetop dressing and instant spuds..who cares if no one likes them>> No one wants to eat after cooking it all anyway.. hang in there..

How come it seems we do all the work?? If I am up to it, my husband and I are going to dinner at a friend's and are bringin a side dish. Everyone is doing this so that no one is stuck with all the work.

I have in the past, though, been the one who cooked most everything, but my husbands sibs would usually bring something of a side dish or snacks. No more. I thought of Christmas at my house and just felt I wanted to hide. I don't think I could deal with 40 plus people in my house and cooking for all of them. I have in the past when we were more like 30, but that was too many. No wonder I went nuts!!!

T is going to be gone for Hannukah, and of course one of my therapy days is Christmas Day and New Years day. This week only one therapy session, and I am okay with that. I guess I am okay with it as I feel physically like crap from flu. Maybe Thanksgiving dinner will be pot pies!!! LOL.

Even if everyone brings a side dish, someone is still stuck with making sure all the toilets are clean!! Someone still has to clean up all the mess and has the hassle of a house full of compnay and kids! Maybe they should all have a list of what they need to clean when they come over,, hee hee

Sounds like a good idea to me; actually my sister-in-laws all jump in to help clean up. Cleaning beforehand is no fun, though.

It seems odd that on a day devoted to being thankful for our bounteous blessings we wear ourselves out to cook a dinner for people we don't much enjoy being around, stressing ourselves to the max and not being much thankful for anything at all.

Thanksgiving was always a day to be with my husband's family, and that was fine. They were lovely people. They're all gone now. And I think the best way I can spend the national day of thanks is to spend it in a loving and reverent way with the people I love and feel grateful for.

Maybe it's selfish. But there it is.

I'll save my stress for Christmas.

My mom started stressing about thanksgiving before halloween.

I think she finally "got it" or just cracked or something, but she is having a service come in to clean her house, and is having the meal catered.

You know what? The combo cleaning service/catering is STILL cheaper per head than buying the food and cooking it.

She loves to decorate and this year she gets to do it.

I'm so proud of her.

Seldom.

I love the cleaning idea too, so along with pot pies, instant spuds, and premade pies and a cleaning service I vote for name tags that have your name plus the part of the house you have to clean before putting your bags away and must clean while you are there and BEFORE you leave...............and I'll bet they will never come again....LOL :)

rK

I was going to have a cleaning service before but I decided I wanted the nice clean house after they left..........so I will have it cleaned by someone else after they leave........I am doing whatever cleaning I can before and the rest they will have to overlook. Besides this is a new house, we just moved in 6 months ago how dirty can it be?

Oh I used to do the cleaning, cooking from scatch, a complicated list of everything and at least three homemade pies from scatch. This year buying a pecan pie and spending it with my youngest Daughter late afternoon and her friends. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is getting sick of this and believe it or not people have their Christmas trees up lit already. Each year earlier and earlier. It just adds stress. And now doing the ebay is more shopping for me . But it's kind of fun picking templets to show off items. A lot of stuff going to the Uk and some babblers found us and bought what a surprise. Well off to buy the pie and get more goods for business. Happy T day to you all and get through it. Phillipa

I am spoiled. I goto sisters. This year I took mashed spuds.
My house is a mess. I am somewhat ashamed I admit.
Before it got this bad, I occasionally had people come over for a meal. We have only a small eating area, so i'd put food on table, and plates etc, and say get yer food and find a seat SOMEwhere....
I find preparing a turkey meal isn't too bad. I used frozen peas and carrots, cranberry from cans, make ahead spuds that can be done a day or two B4.
As for cleanup, well, usu someone pitches in to help...or you can threaten NO DESSERT if you don't wash dishes first...
I wouldn't worry bout clean house, if others don't like it they can not come or LEAVE!
I WOULD find it stressful to have others staying over at my house....my inclanation would be to insist on a hotel....
Sigh.
Complicated.
That why I goto SISTERS!
Hope you can have some enjoyment somehow RK.
