I want a job

Posted by angela2 on November 9, 2007, at 14:57:47

please don't redirect to work.

I really do. I want to have a job so I can tell people what I'm doing with my life. And so that I can have something to do with my life.
I keep procrastinating though.
I'll be like, I can do it tomorrow, or next week. I'll tell myself, maybe this isn't the right way to go about getting a job. I'll get all doubtful and then lost track. I think, this isn't right for me. Ugh.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to overcome procrastination and just do it?

Hello Angela2. Procrastination is really quite hard to overcome and perhaps needs to be done little by little. Like, do a small task you are resisting and then reward yourself. I too am struggling with this and making some slow progress - I think the underlying feeling is usually a kind of fear. Quite a useful book is Susan Jeffers' "Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway.' All the very best. Do let us know how you progress and do hope you find something that works well for you.

Sometimes it's fear, and sometimes it's Godknowswhat.

It can feel like terminal discouragement and (more or less, I suppose) a desire to facilitate disappearance by noninvolvement, rather like a child hiding from something.

Yeah. I read that procrastinators delude themselves into thinking that procrastinating, at the time, is a good thing (I'll do it later, etc), and that's why it's hard to stop.

Like a child hiding from something...that makes me think of a child playing peekaboo. The very young child puts her hands over her eyes and thinks whoever is with her is gone. I am sorta like that until I start talking to people and they ask me what I'm doing. Thats why I sometimes avoid them..

Hi Angela,

My problem hasn't been procrastination, its been I want a job, but nobody will hire me. I think that you need to figure out what type of job might satisfy your needs both economical and psychological.

For me I need to be busy, but not stressed out. When I have nothing to do my thoughts turn to self hatred, when I have so much to do that I can't handle it I have a meltdown. As my T keeps pointing out my current job is not my ideal one, but it has the balance between bored and overwhelmed that I need.

I met with someone yesterday and he helped me write a cover letter. I count that as progress. Go me!
