Have to wait a month to see a therapist

Posted by angela2 on October 17, 2007, at 13:35:06

My doctor recommended a therapist to me. She gave me a number to call so I called and the woman on the other line said it would be a month wait. That's not too long I guess, although it feels reeeaaalllyyy long to me right now.

I've put some of my life on hold because I want to get help from a T. Is that weird? I wish I would try to be more independent..that's all.

She said she practices CBT, so woohoo for that. I think I'm going to call again and ask her more. Like who does she help and what kind of diagnoses does she work with.

a month is pretty standard here, for a first appt. My pdoc is so sought after that new patients have to wait 6 months! They could go to the mental health center for a pdoc but they get in line for my guy.

it is a long time though.. because it's such an anxious time. Keep talking here, we'll try to help you through it.

yes! absolutely call and find out what you can about her. What is her training? Is she a psychologist or some other sort of counsellor? anything that might matter to you..

for me, age was important... and i actually had one T turn me down b/c i was bipolar!

this is someone you will need to trust and confide in, what things matter when you think about that?

i don't think it's weird to put stuff off, but whether you should or not depends on what stuff it is.... and what stuff you have to do in therapy. Big issues take a lot of mental space.

i tend to think though that people should try to keep life as normal as possible, just maybe a little lower key. Therapy is a one hour deal and you have to deal with the other 23 hrs of the day.

you'll need to examine the things you are putting off and why you think you need to

Angela2, I know if you are like me you hate to wait but I too had to wait for my appt which I think was three weeks off. I almost cancelled so many times too but glad now I didnt.

I wanted to put things off until I finally decided if I put things off too much longer I would disappear. I think you know when you can't put it off any longer.

Some things probably can wait and should until you have a T to help with and some things may be jumping to come out that is what a good T will help you with too. You may be surprised at what you actually do end up talking about when you do go. Dory gave me some good advice to go with the flow maybe that is some advice that will help you too. Good luck and keep posting it helps to have the support here. rk
