Terminating

Posted by LlurpsieNoodle on April 18, 2007, at 16:46:07

The smallest termite can destroy a forest worth of fallen trees...

So it's close to termination time. Anyone done this successfully? My last termination went kind of like this:

"Hey T, I'm really f*cked up. See that bandaid you gave me? it's just about saturated with bad stuff that's bubbling out of those old wounds."

At which point oldT ripped off the bandaid and sent me off to NewT who has been helping me keep the wounds clean to promote healing. and giving me nice bandaids to protect them as they start to close.

my last termination happened abruptly in one session it was basically like: you're ready to move on. here's my referral. she can help you. good luck.

I think this time I actually have time to do a real termination instead of the triage termination that happened last go-around.

helpful hints, suggestions?

((((T))))

I don't have any tips. I've only been through one and it wasn't good. It sounds like yours will be positive and I hope you'll post about it. I also hope it's OK if I watch and learn.

P.S. It's awfully nice to have you back, Ms. Noodle.

I was no good at it either.
Perhaps that's why I kept at therapy for so long?
(Given that logic it would be better to die first.)

Okay Declan, this is a bit cryptic to my broken mind.

do you mind if I ask you to elaborate?

did you terminate? did you start working with a new therapist right away, or take time off or declare yourself not needing therapy?

just wondering.

Yes, Lurps, I terminated, I guess.

I spent years in daily therapy and eventually left.

I didn't do therapy after. I thought 15 years was enough.

I wish I could say something sensible about it. At boarding school I had the great good fortune to have a good English teacher and House Master. He was just the best sort....unfulfilled, unhappy, near the end of his life, humane, intelligent with interest in everything. I announced to him that I wanted to see an analyst to have my personality taken apart and put back together again. He remarked (rather presciently) that I must be some kind of masochist.

You mean the therapy?

(As long as I don't think I'm more special than anyone else.)

Actually the therapy went along very well for 2 or 3 years, and then she went away for almost a year, which was impossibly hard, and maybe after that things were never quite the same.

Declan you continued therapy for over a decade when you weren't satisfied? my cat won't let me type unlessmy otherhanf is petting his head or something.

he keeps on reaching out his paw (the right one) to contribute to the typing effort.

back to declan's psychoanalysis. did you reshape your personality? was it indeed masochistic?

back to the cat's paw's lateralization. is this evidence for language specialization in the left hemisphere of the feline brain?

okay. i digress. sorry. terminating. terminator. termite. term.

those are the topics at hand/paw.

Therapy was quite painful which generally I took as a good sign (which sounds masochistic).

It wasn't so much dissatisfaction, but I never again quite got the level of connection and trust I previously had. (And I wasn't in great shape either.)
Perhaps it became more intellectual, although I remember plenty of anger.

(Being selfless and innocent fascinates me.)

There was a lot I didn't know, including how to look after myself. My kids are way more sensible that I was at their age.

Maybe it's going to hurt no matter how we go about it. Giving up relationships is hard.

I wrote her an email and asked her if it was normal to feel sad about terminating. She said that that was normal, and that she also felt sad to see me go because she felt that she and I have been doing good work together and also just because she will miss me for being who I am.

If you *don't* feel sad about termination, what would that say?

To me it would suggest that nothing of consequence got done.

Your T sounds really, really great, Llurpsie. I'm so glad you wrote her with your concerns and that she responded so warmly. I'm sure it is going to be sad and painful to move on from her; but, it sounds like the two of you are going to be doing it the "right" way.
