DENIAL on radio today

Posted by pseudoname on June 20, 2006, at 9:08:54

In one hour (Tues 6/20/06), the Diane Rehm Show on NPR will have an interview with sociologist Eviatar Zerubavel, author of "The Elephant in the Room: Silence and Denial in Everyday Life".

It's a live, hour-long, call-in show beginning at 11:00 AM Eastern U.S. time. Call 800-433-8850 during the show or email questions in advance to drshow@wamu.org. Find stations, listen live online, or (later) download the audio archive at http://www.wamu.org/programs/dr/06/06/20.php#10759

The book is about conspiracies of silence in which everyone knows about some big thing but people never mention it and maneuvre around it socially. One review says that the book is good but offers nothing groundbreaking and that "there are 60 pages of references for just 85 pages of text," so a radio interview might be preferrable to buying it.

Sounds awesome, and definitely more enriching than CSPAN at the moment.

(Why do I watch or listen to stuff that leads me to scream at the TV?) sigh

You always find way cool (that seems to be my new phrase) books, shows, etc. It's generous of you to post them.

Thanks for saying so!  :-D  (nm) » gardenergirl

…was my dad's incipient dementia. It was clear that he had cognitive problems and that they were getting worse. A lot worse. But no one ever acknowledge it.

A decade after his death, my mom and I discussed it, and she acknowledged that it was even worse than I thought. I can connect my mental / emotional problems of those years and shortly after directly to the effects of his dementia and the surrounding conspiracy of silence. I blamed myself for being so disloyal as to think there was anything wrong with him.

Even if nothing could have been done to help Dad, it would have been nice to be let off the hook.
