Ended Online Counselling Today

Posted by canadagirl on April 27, 2006, at 18:25:05

Ugh. I don't think I'll try it this way again. My time is up with this counsellor and I still feel I have a lot to process. Almost like I just got started opening up. (Although it was great to let out all my thoughts as they happened and writing things down gave me a lot of insight.) The counsellor was quite helpful but text is so impersonal especially when I have to word things a certain way to be clear, and he has to word things a certain way as to not be too personal. (I guess anything written down could end up in court someday so they are careful onlline!) Anyway, I feel deflated in a sense. Mentally healthier, but emotionally deflated.

It does sound such a difficult thing to do just by emails, and even more so if they are deliberately being made less personal!

I've found that talking face-to-face is more powerful and maybe supportive, tho of course it means slogging to someones house at a set time, and is probably more expensive. Mine didnt help in any profound way, so I also got really fed up and stopped in the end.

It may be that you do need some more counselling (in a different way), if that is an option?

From what you say, it sounds like you have got some benefit, but are at the stage of opening up and getting into things, which is the opposite of being ready to stop.

So bound to feel a bit abandoned and deflated.Tho that can happen anyway whenever someone stops.

Take care, whatever happens next.

Thanks Fi, I think he was trying to let me down gently...but ugh...I still feel pretty awful. The insurance only covers a specific number of sessions. I need to find someone in person I think. This was so convenient and a good way to get my feet wet in counselling I guess. I just don't think I could commit to going to someone's office every week for a set time. But I do think I still need help.

I terminated with my therapist (kind of online) more than a year back, and it still hurts whenever I think of the way he terminated.

IT is good you stopped it now than later. Believe me, it gets harder as time goes.

Find a good face to face T and work on your issues. Never ever do online counselling again :-)
