How to find a therapist?

Posted by cricket on April 25, 2005, at 8:27:07

If I terminate with my current T, and if I decide to keep trying to delve into the muck of this messed up mind, how in the world do I find a T?

Anytime I search on the internet, they just all give me the creeps. Any better ideas?

I'll be happy to talk about your specific circumstances if you want.

Thanks Fallsfall. That sounds like good advice.

My situation is a little different though because I'm not moving anywhere. I just need to find a new T because I get the strong feeling that mine doesn't want to work with me anymore.

So it's not going to be such an easy, "oh here's what I think you should be looking for in therapy" kind of discussion. In fact, I won't even mention to my current T that I will be looking for someone else unless he specifically offers some references.

As you can tell, this whole thing is very messy right now.

I want to be completely honest with him but I am afraid that he no longer has my best interests at heart and my self-protective mechanism just kicks in and I probably won't say much of anything except I won't be coming anymore.

If you have a general practitioner that would be the person to ask for help. My GP referred my current T.. She said she is pretty good, but not too great.. And I found her assessment perfect.

You might want to talk to your family care practitioner first.

Thanks Pinkeye. That makes sense. (nm) » pinkeye

Been there.

The only change to the process I would recommend is that you openly discuss with your therapist the fact that you feel that he doesn't want to work with you anymore. These discussions are incredibly difficult, but can be *so* valuable.

You may find that he *does* want to work with you - and then you get to figure out why you felt that he didn't.

You may find that he agrees that the two of you are not a productive team right now. He may be able to point you towards someone who would fit better with you, or help you to know what to look for.

Or you may find out that he is a complete jerk.

I was dissatisfied with my previous therapist. I told her that I was going to look for someone else. I got names from a bunch of people, but the one I ended up with came from her.

Don't give up on your current therapist without discussing it with him. I know it is *hard* - no one ever said that therapy was going to be *easy*...
