My New Therapist

Posted by Susan47 on February 9, 2005, at 15:01:24

She broke her ankle yesterday morning, called me from the hospital last night. Cancelled today's appointment, now we're on for next Weds. Unless she's not better. I hope she's going to be okay, I hope they gave her antibiotics, hospitals are dreadfully germ-laden environments, and when you get older, as she is, it's so easy to pick up an infection... I feel so badly for her, she sounded so vulnerable on the telephone last night, she sounds a bit alone really, I hope she has someone to be with her and comfort her and take care of her ... (((New T)))

She reminds me of my old dance teacher, who was hospitalized last year and needed me to drive her to Emergency from home, then I stayed with her all day until she was admitted, comforting her. This is such an incredibly talented, intelligent, accomplished woman with incredibly talented, intelligent and accomplished children but she was all alone when she was really sick and needed to be cared for. She spent weeks in hospital, helpless as a baby, emotionally wise and wicked but also helpless ...

I'm impressed with the concern you have already Susan for your new T. Especially having read some of your posts about the old one who has such a lingering effect on you. I think its a good sign and bodes well for your being able to form a therapeutic alliance with her. My trouble with changing Ts has always been having an over-idealized view of my favorite T who retired. But if I'm honest, your situation sort of parallels the expectations I can never measure up to in comparing myself to my idealized self, if that makes any sense. Grist for the mill. Of couse another non-psychological way of looking at it is, you are simply a really considerate person.

I mean "my situation (of measuring up to an ideal)" not your situation sorry. Having clear thoughts must be nice.

I hope I was clear though that I think it is a good thing that you have concern for your new therapist. You seem to be moving forward. Don't you think?

I only have 10 minutes left to use the computer at this library, but I wanted to say before I forget that I got this wonderful feeling about you sewing that dress for your daughter. Mine are gone in college and they are so into their own world now. Cherish these times when you are still a huge part of shaping who they will become.

I agree, how sweet of you to have such concern for others. I hope that the delay in seeing her is tolerable for you. Make sure you take care of yourself, too.

Thank you so very much for your sentiments, Toph. I got a wonderful feeling when she wore the dress, saw how beautiful she is, went out and had a wonderful time, and her crush actually paid attention to her .. she knew she'd knock him dead, well anyway she was really hoping she would (she's very cute, open and nice, like her mom) .. and she thinks she did so she's very happy. But the nicest thing was that she built her self-confidence: she designed and drew the dress for me, we chose and bought the fabric together, I patterned it out myself (man there were a lot of alterations!!! now I really know the value of a good pattern...) and she saw me sewing it up..in time...looking fabulous. I'm so proud of both of us.

Thank you Sunny, GG and Toph

Your support gives me a wonderful, wonderful warm feeling in the area of my heart, and makes me breathe a little bit faster, and deeper.

I've been very fortunate, really, with therapists. I think I've always had therapists who take their responsibilities seriously.
I can't imagine what it would be like to be in the shoes of one of us who posted above about her therapist mixing up times etc. (((I don't remember))))
