Should I see a Therapist?

Posted by woolav on August 4, 2004, at 10:33:54

Hello, I am seeing a pdoc now, but only for medication. There are no CBT groups in my city. I have panic disorder and depression. For the past few years, I have come to realize that my family life was very messed up. And I wonder if seeing a therapist inconjunction with my pdoc would help me. Maybe uncover some things that started all my problems. Any advise??

Hi Woolav
IMHO i'd say definately give it a try. just so you know i've heard that on the average it takes about 3 times before you may find the right T. So just keep that in mind going in, that the first one you pick may not be a match for you-you have no obligation to stay with that first one. So maybe take some time and think about an initial agenda. What would you be looking for in a T? theory on therapy? comfort? gender? etc.

Best of Luck
B2c.

CBT is very standard treatment for panic disorder. Even if there aren't any groups in your area, there may be individual therapists who offer CBT. If you put your toe in the water that way, particularly if you find a therapist who does CBT and other techniques as well, you can then explore how therapy might help you in other ways.

But I really do recommend CBT for panic. The behavioral techniques were enormously helpful to me. I had panic associated with obsessive compulsive disorder, and when my OCD flares up now I can usually handle it with minimal medication using the CBT techniques I learned years ago.

Also, B2chica is right. There are many therapists out there with many different styles. You might need to interview a few or see a few before you find one that is a good fit. I sort of lucked out with mine, but I've seen enough other mental health professionals to know that it really was luck.

Well, thanks! I feel like i should look into a therapist now and ask a few questions. The last thing i need is a bad T doc. I already had a bad experiance with a pdoc before.....ahhh.
