General Question: What is the opposite of ego?

Posted by jsimle on July 24, 2004, at 19:28:40

To All,

Hi everyone, I read all your posts regarding love and appreciated your insight. I was just contemplating some ideas and was wondering what the opposite of ego is? I thought maybe it would be humility but that would be the opposite of arrogrance which I believe is different from ego.

Also coming back to how some said that the opposite of love and hate is indifference? But is indiffernce an emotion?

Just some thoughts...

I think it totally depends on how you are using ego...in the classic sense (self) or in a more pejorative way (big headed). For the later, I think humble or selfless might work.

But in the classic sense, the opposite of self is other. Which is why when you don't have a strong ego, you can either be hurt easily by others or you tend to emulate them, which can eventually lead to conflict with your true self.

I don't know if indifference is an emotion. It seems to be the opposite of one! :)
