Turning the Tables on your Therapist

Posted by DaisyM on May 5, 2004, at 19:42:00

Today was really productive and actually fun in that I got to "show off," at least a little, what I do best. My Therapist almost never gets to see me this way, and it was nice, for a change, to be competent and creative with him.

We started with why yesterday was helpful and why I'm more put together today. He told me he thought I "just" needed the reassurance and if that is what worked, we need to do more of it, even though part of me cringes to here that.

We then talked about basic selfcare stuff about my upcoming staff retreat. I told him that some of what I could do to protect myself from overwhelm was "wimpy." He said, (I love this) "Screw wimpy! This is about survival and keeping you together..." So we talked about how to duck questions and what prepared statements I might make that didn't sound like I didn't want to be in charge or a was dodging stuff. And we talked about my need to control everything and he made me practice saying, "so what?" And not immediately following that with But!

We did get off a bit talking about life wishes and career paths so we only got through the first day of the agenda. We are going to continue tomorrow with the rest. As I was leaving I told him that tomorrow we could practice the self-discovery "fun" tests we had for our staff.

Like, "if you were a cookie, what would you be?" He said he was up for that tomorrow but I had to answer it now. I said, "burned" of course. He laughed...

so OK Babblers, here are three of the psych questions:
If you were a cookie, what would you be?

If you had to be stranded on a desert island with a famous person, past or present, who would it be?

If you were a type of shoe, what would it be?

i love questions. especially questions like these...

> If you were a cookie, what would you be?

i think i would be an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. they're like the best of everything-- chocolate chip and oatmeal, but minus the raisins. and slightly chewy-- not crunchy. heh.

> If you had to be stranded on a desert island with a famous person, past or present, who would it be?

Tom Shear, of Assemblage 23, my favorite electronica artist of all time. I'd marry that man... *sigh*

> If you were a type of shoe, what would it be?

a converse all-star, without a doubt. i own about 11 pairs! i'm not sure what color i'd be... maybe the old school plaid flannel. or just classic black.

A plain cookie topped with an absract design of icing and candy embellishments. People would look at it and think, I don't know quite what it is, but it's oddly appealing. And so unique.

Oh jeez, I tend not to think too highly of famous people. I even suspect Mother Teresa is really just codependent. I'll have to think on this one.

A lucite platform sandal with toys embedded in the heel, and glittery straps. Or a dirty birkenstock. One or the other. Can I be a pair of mismatched shoes?

> If you were a cookie, what would you be? I have to agree with ghost: oatmeal chocolate chip. Kind of homey and comforting, but a bit of the unexpected. And "healthy" too, as oatmeal is good for cholesterol (rationalize, rationalize, rationalize.)
>

Benjamin Franklin. What a wonderfully humanistic wise man. And besides, I'm sure he could invent stuff to make it more livable.

A pair of classic black sling back pumps perhaps with some contrast stitching for (again) a bit of the unexpected without being shocking. BTW, how blooming hard is it to find sling backs these days? I know mules are in, but sometimes I need that back strap, darn it!

Great questions, Daisy. I will be interested in hearing what your T says.

Take care,
gg

I would be "home-made".

That's easy . . . Moses (he seemed to come in pretty handy near water!)

> If you were a type of shoe, what would it be?

Leather sandals - tough on the outside, but soft on the inside.

Peanut butter with the fork tines pressed on to the top. Hot and chewey.

Mother Theresa

Tough one. I don't like cookies, so I don't know that many of them. I'd sort of like to be a chewy fresh baked oatmeal rasin cookie with lots of molasses? is it? Whatever that sweet stuff is. But maybe I'm more a vanilla wafer. Or a ginger snap.

> If you had to be stranded on a desert island with a famous person, past or present, who would it be?

Moses. Not only is he one of my heroes, as I love the reluctant hero. He'd also have a pretty good shot of getting us off the island.

My husband would say a loafer. :))

Chocolate Chip with Walnuts - quite sweet, a little nutty. :-b

> If you had to be stranded on a desert island with a famous person, past or present, who would it be?

Honestly - no idea. I like the Moses and Noah answers. It surely wouldn't be anyone from "Survivor".

> If you were a type of shoe, what would it be?

Bedroom slippers. Nice comfy plush ones. With rubber soles, so they could be worn outside too.

Daisy,

I love the fact that you got to show off! That must have really been ego-boosting! I've said to my therapist that he wouldn't even recognize the highly functional, competent me at work -- he would think it was my less crazy twin.

As for your questions . . .

Cookie: gingerbread man (run, run as fast as you can!)

Island partner: Bono from U2 -- then I wouldn't care at all about being stranded ;)

Shoe: a well-worn, comfortable pair of leather sandals, reliable and predictable and very low-maintenance

This was fun!

2. Thomas Jefferson
3. Bass sandals--they last for years

Cookie: caught between a buttery large chocolate chip and a snickerdoodle.

Stranded with: The guitarist in my band - he's creative, fun and a great visual artist as well. We could write a lot of songs together and make coconut shell art to keep ourselves entertained.

Shoe: Leather flip flops.

Hah! Been in a long meltdown, and all I keep thinking of is how I'd pull myself up by my bootstraps if I could just get out of these slippers.... 8*P

So, I guess I **am** slippers with a desperate yearning to be boots. With straps.

I'm glad you had a good session, Daisy!

> If you were a cookie, what would you be?

Well, obviously, my first choice would be to be one of Karen's therapist cookies. If that was not possible, I suppose I would like to be a homemade, warm, Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookie. Pretty predictable but so undeniably yummy.

Just a note, I would never want to be one of those sugar kind of cookies with the dried (fake?), chewy, somewhat non-edible cherry in the middle. You guys know what I'm talking about?

> If you had to be stranded on a desert island with a famous person, past or present, who would it be?

Today, I'm thinking Martin Luther King. Can't really decide, though. Lots of great people to choose from.

> If you were a type of shoe, what would it be?

Sometimes I wish I was a cute, strappy, little sandal, but I believe those could go in and out of fashion rather quickly. So, a nice, standard leather slip on would be fine. Perhaps with a low, chunky heel and a buckle for decoration. Perfect for everyday wear.
