I did an email consult

Posted by Dinah on June 20, 2003, at 17:43:05

With someone I really respect. And while e-therapy has its limitations I'm sure, what it came up with was pretty much what my therapist has said. A bit less cagily. So.... Maybe, just maybe my quest for a label is over. Maybe, just maybe I can rest here for a while without feeling the need for more diagnosis. Maybe I can follow this lead for a while as far as I can, before trying to figure out why I'm still screwed up. :)

A little cross-validation on the side, eh?

Hope you can move on from the label thing. If you're like the rest of us, you'll look for something else to quest after--we all need to be questing about something, don't we?

Dinah,

Although e-therapy has it's limitations, it also has its advantages. There was a reason why Freud had his patients lie on a couch unable to see him. I find it much easier to be totally honest and open. I think because I know he can't look into my eyes and see (what I perceive) is an evil person.

I am glad you were relieved. Happiness is short-lived, but awesome when it is present. I hope yours lasts quite a while.

If not happiness, then at least a bit of relief. There's that awful moment when you send your deepest darkest secrets into cyberspace and really hope you don't hear you're crazy in response. :)

And of course, therapist knew and approved.

She added, folding hands primly and smiling angelically.

You always have to look out for those people sitting in the corner smiling angelically. ;}

Hey, "obsession" is your word, not mine, kiddo! :-) Why pathologize it? Don't you think we humans are always on some kind of quest or another?

Allll-righty. Quest it is. And a much healthier quest than the one for a label. And a tougher journey too.

The e-therapist I consulted was the author of The Myth of Sanity who offers online therapy at her website.

Your help in sorting all this out was invaluable. I found our dialog very helpful in clarifying my experience and making it possible to send her a somewhat coherent email.

Thanks again for all your help and kindness.

I'm so glad I had helped in any way. Wow, actually interacting with the author of one of my favorite books- it must have really helped any doubts you had. I had a running e-mail 'conversation' with Ivan Goldberg among others, I especially like the viewpoints of psychoanalysts (and it was free :-)! I guess the point of one of the posters that Freudian practictioners who don't have eye contact does work. Although when I tried it with my own shrink I lasted less than 5 minutes w/o looking at him, I couldn't stand not seeing his reaction to things I said. take care, judy
