PTSD

Posted by kitt on September 30, 2002, at 21:45:43

Wow, where to begin. Went into crisis a few years ago having flashbacks of a childhood abuse that happened at a very young age. I might add that I have always been rather suspicious of crap like that happening to people until it happened to me. It was not uncovered during hypnosis, or brought on by suggestion of any sort. Tried to get some therapy and some drugs to help with the symptoms until my psych told me that they really didn't have a drug for PTSD. Lately I've been studying the limbic system, trying to understand what's going on with me biochemically and why the drugs don't work and trying to figure out what might work. So far, it is my understanding that increased levels of norepinephrine cause anhedonia and increased levels of dopamine cause paranoid delusions and anxiety is caused because of increased levels of norepinephrine and epinephrine. MAOIs increase the life of the norepinephrine and epinephrine and most of the antidepressants have MAOIs and SSRIs and the dopamine inhibitors don't seem to help either. Any input would be appreciated.

Dear Kitt,
I've tried evrything pharmocologically-wise, and I'm sorry to say the only thing that has helped are the benzos (xanax and klonopin) for the panic attacks associated with PTSD. Just really intense psychotherapy- my therapist wants me in 3x/week because I've had a relapse (I'm further along on the dissociative scale and i self-injure). She works with a mixture of interpersonal and DBT and teaches me coping skills. It really is the only proven way, and the severity of the abuse dictates the length of time. I would look (if you already don't have) for a therapist experienced with victims of childhood abuse. Take care, judy

hi. zoloft can numb you out if that's what you want. decide what you want, i guess. if you do not want to feel, then ssri's can be helpful. if you want to feel, but you sometimes find the anxiety too hard to bear, then i agree to head the route of a benzo as needed. if you move towards taking a benzo regularly each day, then you will also move towards not feeling as much either. if you are doing therapy, it's my humble opinion that it's best to be able to feel so you can get through the stuff and move on... and use the benzos when you need to. if you aren't doing the therapy route and just want to cover it up, then numbing out would be the way to go. i'm not advocating either way for you, but just giving you the options from one who feels a bit experienced in this area. :-) take care,
terra
