How do you know when to go to the hospital?

Posted by sienna on September 27, 2002, at 19:31:24

Hi,
Ok, now Ive posted this accidentally to psychobabble twice. Im really sorry I feel like a complete idiot. Hopefully now it will end up in the right place.

Im wondering how do people know when to go to the hospital? Like if you feel really out of control and it feels really scary and dangerous, how do you know when you should go. Im not sure if this is the right board for this question, but Ive been trying to figure this out, and im not sure.

thanks
Sienna

If you feel you can't trust yourself not to try and kill yourself I would go to the hospital. I just know when I was really bad the part of me that wanted to die got too much control. When that happens, it doesn't matter how logically you argue with yourself not to do anything b/c the part of you that wants to die can twist it all around and use it as evidence that you should. I would suggest going right away when you feel out of control, b/c tormenting yourself over whether to do something or not to do something is traumatic in and of itself. Suicide attempts are harmful and should be prevented, beyond the fact that you might actually manage to kill yourself. I hope you are seeing a therapist. Usually therapists give you a number to call if you have a crisis. (Otherwise, you need to see a therapist and need to ask for a number to call if you happen to have a crisis--it's standard policy for them to give you a number.) It varies to whom the number connects you to. It is a good lifeline to have in case you need to talk to someone right away.

Thanks for writing me. I trust myself right now, but i have gone through all my old stuff and cleaned it out incase i do kill myself. Its bad,, but i dont want my family to have to deal with my old journals and things like that. I dont want them to read some of that stuff so Im throwing it away. Ive gone through most of it. Also, it was worse a few weeks ago, Im a litlte better, the Geodon is helping I think, but Im still really edgy. I am trying to figure out how to know when to go, because I thought i needed to go last time and I didnt' go but I was really wrecked after. And I exhausted some of my friends.

Anyway, I have a psychologist and a psychiatrist and they are trying to keep me out of the hospital. It was frustrating because at first I thought my doctor wanted me to go, and i really didnt want to go, then when it got really bad, i wanted to go, but thought they didnt want me to. I do have a crisis line to call and there is always 911, though i really dont want to do that. I can also go to the ER at my hospital. But I think its more traumatic that way. I understand what you mean about hte traumatic part of feeling suicidal and how it can get twisted. That can get really scary.

Thanks agian for writing its nice to know that there is someone else out there.

Sienna

Sienna, you mentioned exhausting some of your friends. I think that's a clue that you need to be surrounded instead by people trained in how to help those with depression or mania or whatever. Having said that, it's a huge (and scary) step to go into the hospital - I know, I've been there - but everybody needs to be taken care of at some point in their lives. Let your guard down and allow someone to look out for you, so that you can concentrate instead on the real reasons why you are there.

Good luck in whatever you decide is best for you,
Ginjoint

I went to the hospital when every waking morning and through the day I thought I would be better off dead..and was planning different ways , when I relized that this is not how I felt before depression hit (through the breakup of someone that I loved )and that there must be something wrong with my brain. I tried effexor and got even worse , started timing the trains going by . That was then when I went to the hospital and told them I need help or I am going to die and think about it all the time . They admitted me and put me on 2 other meds and took me off the effexor. One month later I am here to tell you I feel fabulous and am planning all sorts of things for my future . Dont delay please !!!! Go!!!dont delay your meds could be causing you to feel this way . They might put you on some meds to counter act the way that you are feeling.I am Taking Remeron 30mg at night and .5 mg of clonazepamonce through the day ..I am here today to answer your thread and am happy to be here!!

Good luck and don't delay

Thanks everyone

Im feeling a lot better and actually have a better idea now when i should go. i just dont know what is normal and how abnormal or messed up i have to be to go, but now i have a better idea. Im trying to keep holding it together but its a rollercoaster and my moods fluctuate so much. I think im pretty ok now and hopefully it will stay that way.

thanks agian for all your help!
