to help with my dissociation (they train them for people with epilepsy- and this isn't so different). my therapist has another client with similar symptoms- the panic, agoraphobia, dissociation, etc. and her dog is really helping her. if anyone has gone this route, can they tell me what to expect? thanks-judy

I think mouse did a lot of research on assistance dogs, so she might have some information. :)

Congratulations! I hear they're wonderful.

Dear Judy,

I looked into this a while ago and found these sites. I talked to a local trainer for seeing eye dogs and she said it takes a special kind of dog to sense the epilepsy.

Hi Mouse,
Thank you for the sites, they were excellent. I spoke to the trainer today and we are going to pick out a golden retriever female pup- she said in the middle of the litter (so not too shy or agressive). We'll start basic training at 12 weeks and then general obediance and retrieval (phone, etc). The last part about 12 months will be service dog training- a lot of private sessions. Last time graduation was at Disneyland, i'm freaked about that already. She said it will take a lot of work on my part to make it work but i'm optimistic because i've never si with my dogs around, they keep me grounded but aren't well trained and not the right breeds for this type of training. it's expensive- i'm buying the pup, and the organization is non-profit so they have donations to pay half- it will still cost me $3000, which is deductible. i truly hope this will change my life, my therapist certainly thinks so. take care, judy

Dear Judy,
I went on a hike Sunday, and one of the ladies brought her dog, I think it was a golden retreiver, with curly hair...anyway, I have never been herded up the mountain before :0) that is what this dog did, I am sure he climbed the side of the mountain ten times to our one....coming back to check to make sure everyone was accounted for. Part way up, one person decided to return to the car, and he took off to look for her, until the owner called him back and reassured him...the next time he came down, I was the last person, and he checked me, and turned right back up the trail...all accounted for. I never knew dogs could count.

Yes, I think assistance dogs require a lot of work, but the payoff is tremendous. I have never met someone who has one...yours will be wonderful, I am sure. I really look forward to hearing about your experience.

Judy

This is so unbelievably cool - you definitely have to keep us posted on how this goes. I'm such a fan of golden retrievers - my last 2 dogs have been goldens. They're very sweet and quite intuitive. Good Luck
