I can't go that far, CS.

There were ways and ways he could have done that, and given the political reality of the situation, he hurt *everyone* with the way he did do it.

Personally, I find the comments about God wiping out half the city, and sweeping clean the gulf coast worse than the chocolate city comment.

But the reality of what he did made politicians already uncomfortable with sending money to Louisiana leaders (or gave them more of an excuse, depending on your viewpoint). And it further ignited an already tense situation in a tired, hurting, and therefore very volatile populace.

There are ways and ways of pointing out pink elephants.

He's apologized for both comments, and I don't really want to belabor something already publicly regretted. I daresay he'll regret it even more come April.

But I can't say I'm happy he said it.

Whoops, that probably belonged on politics

I'm just rather sensitive on the topic and reacted without thinking.

I'm sorry.

Oh, I totally agree. I just think that in his own hot-headed way that Nagin was on track with the racial comments he made. I don't it makes him a good mayor - it makes him outspoken. And that is what doesn't happen enough. It seems more that if we don't talk about these issues that they don't really exist.

I hope you don't think I agree with Nagin's pronouncements about God and N.O.'s tragedies.

No, of course not.

I was just wishing that the mayor would decide that he shouldn't say things BEFORE he says them. :)

Because we've got a huuuuge credibility problem, and our perception is that that's not helped by our mayor being the target of jokes on late night TV.

I think we're just sort of fed up that our elected officials don't seem to be taking our image very seriously.
