hives from sweating/hot showers?

Posted by wishingstar on July 30, 2006, at 14:38:08

I seem to get hives often when I sweat a lot for a significant amount of time (such as being outside for 30 min on a 100degree day, taking a particularly intense aerobics class, etc). I really dont understand why, and I was wondering if anyone here could shed any light on it. I wouldnt say that I sweat any more than the average person. Sometimes hives also pop up when I take a long (20-30 minute) hot shower. They mostly appear on my back, chest, and arms, and also sometimes my stomach, whether or not these areas are covered. They usually go away in 10-15 minutes. It doesnt happen every time I'm in these situations... maybe once every 2 weeks, on average.

I have spoken to many people about this odd problem, and no one seems to have any idea or have ever experienced it themselves. Any ideas? It's not really so bothersome that I need an immediate fix.. I'm really just interested in understanding what the heck is going on!

Thanks for the link. I am actually familiar with heat rash. I've had it before too, when I used to be an athlete. However, I'm really quite sure that what I'm experiencing now is hives, with the telltale appearance and itchiness. As far as I can remember, I have never gotten the hives under my arms or on other areas that rub, which is where my heat rash used to occasionally pop up. It's very odd indeed. I read somewhere once that it's possible to be "allergic" to something in your own body - I forget what exactly - that is released when you sweat a lot. It was a few years ago that I read that though.

Thanks for your response. :)

my friend used to get this, and her doctor told her that it was a sign of low blood pressure. urged her to eat more salt.

I remember vividly when we were hiking one day, she just totally broke out in big angry blotches. after 30 minutes they were gone. She, on the other hand, was pissed off at her sensitive skin for much longer than 30 minutes.

ahh interesting! I actually do have low blood pressure. I wonder if these moments when I get hives arent at times when my blood pressure has dropped a little lower than normal. I will look into that idea. Thanks!
