GPX and depression

Posted by Hugh on May 1, 2015, at 10:42:31

It has been found that people suffering from depression have significantly lower GPX levels than normal controls.

"GPX is an enzyme that reduces hydroperoxides by oxidizing glutathione and consequently protects the cells from oxidative damage.... Our results suggest that patients with depression would benefit from Ebselen or a supplementation with glutathione, N-Acetyl-l-Cysteine and selenium."

Taking glutathione orally isn't supposed to do much good. IV glutathione is supposed to be much better. And Brazil nuts increase GPX levels more than twice as much as selenium supplements.

Thanks for this, Hugh. I didn't personally benefit in the long run from supplementation with sublingual glutathione, NAC, or selenium (although I didn't take NAC into the long run because I found the agitation and irritability to be too much), but others might benefit from this approach.

I'm going to give Brazil nuts a try for a month or two, since they're a much richer source of GPX than selenium capsules.

Good luck, Hugh. I'll have to consider Brazil nuts, as well.

My doc's asked me to take NAC. I became ill the first time I took it, and have been putting off restarting. Maybe titrate up?

Thanks for the link. And I like Brazil nuts.
