SAM-e

Posted by ddown on May 3, 2010, at 23:42:38

Anyone have bad experiences with SAM-e. I only took 200 mg a day for a week and now almost 2 weeks later I am still having a racing heart, anxiety, and bad insomnia. I just want these side effects to go away.

Some people may be more sensitive. I've taken it in the past with some success but I think it may have been affecting my sleep a little.

200mg is not a large dose, but if it is having that affect on you maybe you should taper off. Was it recommended by a doctor or did you just decide to try it on your own?

Is it possible it is not the SAM-E but anxiety is just building for other reasons.

There are other natural things you can try, but you would have to check out potential interactions with the SAM-E.

L-tryptophan (be careful of the brand) helps some people with sleep but I don't think you can take that with SAM-E. Melatonin is another sleep aid. Kava kava is supposedly a natural anti-anxiety drug but it's action may be similar to the benzodiazepenes, so it is probably not something you want to take long term.

These are just some ideas, but please consult someone with more experience before trying anything

It's possible my symptoms are unrelated to the SAM-e, but the timing of my symptoms with my usage of SAM-e is interesting. The heart palpitations are slowly decreasing. I now just have this sense of restlessness, low grade anxiety even when Im just sitting there trying to relax. Hopefully this will subside within the next week as well.

So you are still taking it; is it improving your depression?

If decide to stop it; it is best done gradually.

ST John's Wort is another natural product you can try for depression, but the best one from my understanding is from Germany - it can be ordered from the US.

Don't combine the two; always best to consult your health care provider.
