oVeR GooGLeD - Good liver sups?

Posted by algizsim on December 3, 2009, at 14:58:14

Ok i spent like 5 hrs googling..

All i want to know is if there is a nice healthy natural product (pref. just 1 ingredient, not 400 chinese ones) that i can take almost daily to help maintain my liver health on a regular basis without clearing out all my meds.

I am on Pristiq (desvenlafaxine), Valpro (sodium valproate) and Seroquel...

Now im unsure about milk thistles effects on my meds, i also looked into some L methionine, glutathione and NAC (n acetyl cysteine).

Join me in my quest for medication assisted feeling of general wellbeing and vitality!

I looked up the interactions betweeen your meds and milk thistle and non are indicated. I did this using the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. You need a subscription and I have access to one.

Selected for Interaction Check:

Pristiq (ingredients: Desvenlafaxine)
Valproate (ingredients: Valproic Acid)
MILK THISTLE

Natural Product/Drug Interaction Results:

No known interactions were found for the selected products.

Milk Thistle is the household name for liver herbs, but is by no means the best or the only one. There are a handful of others that have significant contributions above and beyond what Milk Thistle has to offer.

Dr Zhang of New York is a specialist in combining Western and Eastern medicine in treating liver diseases and Lyme diseases. His book outlines the specific herbs. Some of them you have probably never heard of, and some of them would probably surprise you because we don't usually think of them as liver herbs.

rule of thumb, eat whetever needs helping
so eat liver? (problem is most are contaminated due to pesticides, herbicides, additives etc.. but if you can get some real organic grass eating animals, probably should help.
otherwise, only thing I found that helped myself was milk thistle (I hate taste of liver)
tea

add: don't eat only liver or too much of liver that is too high in VitA (like polar bear or dog as those explorers did at the poles)
