B12 shots- nasal? depression?

Posted by aj1840 on October 21, 2008, at 5:14:01

I suffer from depression and am a vegetarian. B 12 shots are expensive. I know pills don't work. What are my other options, I have read about NASCOBAL. Perhaps there are some cheaper effective alternatives?

Thank you!

I haven't heard of that product, but have you tried sublingual lozenges?

Mr. Mercola is offering a spray these days: http://products.mercola.com/vitamin-b12-spray/

He has a money back guarantee, at least. I've thought of trying it.

Thanks- I looked at the site but I have been told by a psychopharmacologist that b-12 can't be absorbed orally at all- I am not sure if that is true though?

I'm always suspicious when somebody manages to make a vitamin into something only available by prescription. Looks to me like it's not necessary:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16034940

Several case control and case series studies have reported equal efficacy of oral administration of vitamin B12 but it is rarely prescribed in this form, other than in Sweden and Canada. Doctors may not be prescribing oral formulations because they are unaware of this option or have concerns regarding effectiveness.... The evidence derived from these limited studies suggests that 2000 mcg doses of oral vitamin B12 daily and 1000 mcg doses initially daily and thereafter weekly and then monthly may be as effective as intramuscular administration in obtaining short term haematological and neurological responses in vitamin B12 deficient patients.

b12 can be absorbed into the bloodstream to an certain extent if the tablet is left to dissolve under the tongue. this method can be a viable alternative to shots or nasal spray.

just be sure to get sublingual b12.

I was found to have low B12 levels (they actually thought I had MS because of my symptoms) and sublingual B12 has brought my levels up to normal levels. I take one per day of either Source Natural's or Jarrow's 1 mg methylcobalamin (which ever one is one sale).
Good luck!

I just buy the ampoules and give myself the shots? The ampoules are only about $3 each US ? and I give about 1/2 ampoule at a time a few days apart once a month? That's hydroxycobalamin ampoules but I'd assume methylcobalamin would cost about the same.
I purchase mine from an online pharmacy.

I also give myself B1 shots at only about 10mg to 20mg at a time(the ampoule is 100mg) which is all I need and it helps me utilise the B12 shots, otherwise , for some obscure reason, the B12 makes the palms of my hands and soles of my feet go purplish red and tingle. I'm assuming the B12 depletes the B1 when it is being used up :-) I also make sure I take some P5P form of B6 (either eneteric coated or sublingual) and a multiB with folic acid and biotin at the same time to help the uilisation of the B12.
It really does give me a lift and also seems to perhaps alleviate neuropathic pain at least as well as antiinflammatories :-) Hope it continues working!
I couldn't afford to pay a doctor to give me tghe shots.. the docotr suggested I give them to myself, and showed me how,.. that's why I started

Hi Liz,

me too with stopping MS symptoms, but I found the subliguals did have a effect but not as much as the injections. Glad the sublinguals work for you. I take them between injections :-)
All my MS symptoms gradually resolved over a few years. Almost gone now, well really just occasional glimpses :-).. and they are when I've forgottem about the regimen I escribed above for more than a few months :-)

Pills should work if you do not have malabsorbtion.

How do you know pills do not work?.
