Fish oil may help.

There are two important oils in fish oil (at least), called EPA and DHA. Right now, researchers seem to think that EPA is more important.

It's quite safe, though a few people complain it causes things like anxiety and insomnia. I'd suggest you get ahold of some fish oil from a good source (there are threads of discussion on this page that you can search for, telling which are best), one that has had the toxins from the fish cleaned out, and try it for a few weeks.

You could also try the herb Rhodiola Rosea, but less is known about it. (It's safe, too).

Improving diet, and getting more exercise could help, too. Has she tried traditional medical approaches? Stimulants (methylphenidate/Concerta/Ritalin, or dexedrine/adderall) work about 3/4 of the time. They are heavily researched, and have been used in various illnesses for over 50 years. While there are some risks, they are well-known, and considered to be small in comparison to the medications' positive effects (if they work).
There are other medications that can work as well, if you are too wary of those, or if they didn't work out: desipramine, nortriptyline, and SSRIs (prozac, paxil, etc).

Some others on this board may be able to give you more information on herbal ideas. But I think fish-oil has pretty good evidence behind it.

Best of luck--hope you find something that helps!

In an effort to improve my mental state (rather than anything specifically to do with ADHD) my doctor gave me something designed for ADHD called ADFX. It's a concoction of fractions from American Ginseng and Ginkgo. I didn't like it much.

Since amphetamines are used for ADHD, could more benign alternatives like deprenyl or rhodiola be of some use?

Fish oil, of course. Especially DHA?

Keeping in mind that the idea here is support and not posting anything that you know to be false, an exaggeration or overgeneralization, would you please rephrase the above?

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:

The mispelled word was potion ....I apologize if anyone was offended.

Main Entry: po·tion
Pronunciation: 'pO-sh&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English pocioun, from Anglo-French poisun, pocioun drink, potion, from Latin potion-, potio, from potare to drink -- more at POTABLE
: a mixture of liquids (as liquor or medicine)

Hi.I think your GREAT for looking for alternatives.Iv heard so much about fish oil.Its to do with this new generation, and how children arent eating the kind of food they ate hundreds of years ago,so the natural seafood and oils are severely lacking in the growing brain of children. That AND how fastpaced everything is these days and overstimulating,Good on you and good luck!

I admit, that didn't occur to me. Thanks for your patience.

I would add "Go Buckeyes!", but despite having lived in Ohio longer than I lived in Michigan....I just can't bring myself to say that. ;)

Interactive Metronome & Neurofeedback are two non-drug therapies for ADD/HD (are we allowed to discuss non-drug therapies on this site?)

Neurofeedback therapy for ADD/HD is (roughly) based on the the idea that a person can unlearn ADD by teaching his or herself to produce the kinds of brainwaves associated with paying attention:

Neurofeedback Link: http://www.eegspectrum.com/

Interactive Metronome therapy for ADD is (roughly) based on the idea that attention requires a strong sense of time. Therapists teach patients to clap and stomp along with a beat for extended periods of time:

IM: http://www.interactivemetronome.com/im/par_add.asp?mn=1

I personally have tried both therapies without success.
