increasing fish oil dosage

Posted by mike99 on March 6, 2006, at 10:28:55

I have been taking 6 grams of fish oil (1 gram EPA) per day for about 7 months for dysthymia and ADHD.

I have noticed appreciable yet modest improvement in both areas.

My question to anyone if whether there might be any benefit in increasing the fish oil? I'm aware of one study comparing 1, 2 and gm/day dosages of EPA and I think the gist of it was that there is likely little benefit beyond 1 gram EPA/day and that it may even be more effective than the 4 gram dose.

Would anyone care to share any thoughts or experiences on this? Thanks.

OK--a few typos in that previous post. Most importantly I meant to state there was a study comparing 1, 2 and 4 grams/day of EPA. ...ugghhh (like Napoleon Dynamite;)

Well, I think it's helpful to bear in mind that that was *one* study that hasn't been replicated and somewhat contradicts Stoll's initial study in which 9 grams of EPA was used (important caveat: his initial study was used in bipolar depression, not unipolar). So, he himself says that he starts off with a smaller dose than he used to, beginning at about 1 or 2 grams of EPA per day and then increasing the EPA dose by 1 gram per week until an effect is achieved, with 9 grams EPA the upper limit. Most other studies have used much more modest doses of EPA per day (in the 1-2 gram range), but I think Stoll's initial study is suggestive that high doses may be useful, as well.

Anecdotally, a good friend of mine just upped her dose from 1 gram to 2 and she thinks that it's helped her a lot. I can't speak for myself (I've been on 1.5 g EPA for just over two months now and haven't noticed much difference) but I bet there are others on the board who may be able to weigh in. And my friend really did notice an effect from going up a gram a day, perhaps because it also seems to affect neurotransmitters, aside from improving the composition of the neurons.

Deficiancy of o3 will affect the dopamine content of the brain. I personally noticed a plateau at about 1.5 grams of EPA, but I did notice a positive shift when I moved to a slightly more expensive brand which as 500mg EPA per cap.

As a side note, I have been combining o3 with uridine. There have been a few reports of synergy between the two, at least in mice.

Thanks...I think I'll up the dosage a bit.
