How long does it take to see results with fish oil

Posted by platinumbride on January 30, 2006, at 19:32:55

Am I going to have to wait months, swallowing nasty fish oil before I know if this is working for me?
Also, how much is necessary for Bipolar II relief?

I tired this stuff before - drinking the lemon-flavored stuff, but I never kept at it for more than a few weeks. Then I'd stop, start again and then quit.

Thanks for your help

Diane

Hi Diane,
i think at an adequate dose, you should see some results in a month, i'm not positive though, it varies, but i wanted to let you know, i saw flavored fish oil chewables [states "no fish oil taste"] in cvs in phila. where i live, something new by Life Source products, good luck..john

Thanks John,

Do you know what an adequate dose is? Or does that really vary too?

Thanks so much,

Diane

Hi Diane
the fish oil i take has 218 mgs. of EPA, and 144 mgs. of DHA, in each capsule, i take 4-8 capsules daily, 4 after breakfast, 4 in the afternoon. i'm really not sure of exact dosages for depression or mood stabilization, but i have heard 1-4 grams is a standard dose.
if you type in "fish oil dosages" on your browser, there are some great threads in the babble archives, i read where one person had complete remission from depression with fish oil, one thing i have read alot, and have found to be true, is taking fish oil after 4 p.m may effect sleep, it is better to take it earlier in the day!! take care...john

Someone, in one of the earlier threads, mentioned that it may take up to 12 weeks for Omega-3 stores to be repleted, though, so maybe patience is called for. (At least that's what I'm hoping--grin--as I'm fairly new to the Fish Oil supplementation myself.) As for me, I'm at 1.5 EPA total, divided between morning and evening. I haven't noticed anything yet. But having been a vegetarian for 10 years up to this point, I imagine it will be a while before I'm remotely close to where others are, in terms of their Omega-3 stores!

I saw my doctor yesterday. I remembered your question here. I told her maybe I would try increasing my fish oil from 1g a day to 2g-4g. She specializes in combining psych meds with nutrional support. She said definitely give it a try. And then she said it would take about 3 weeks to see if it made a difference.

Fish oil science is pretty new. And I'm sure everyone would have varying opinions. But I just wanted to share with you what my doctor said about your question of how long it would take for fish oil to start working...3 weeks.

Hi,
I take the Costco (Kirkland) brand of concentrated fish oil. It is coated to release in the intestines instead of the stomach, to avoid the nasty fish taste. I take 10 grams per day and have no fish aftertaste. You need to look at the total EPA and DHA rather than the grams of fish oil. I take 2400mg of EPA and 2000mg of DHA on a daily basis. After several months of this and maybe a missed diagnosis of soft bipolar, I feel great. I also came off of 90mg per day of Nardil over eight weeks with no side effects or return of depression (cross my fingers).

Hi Jedi,

Thanks for the info. I too, hope that your depression stays elsewhere....like in a parallel universe or is transferred to certain world leaders or former ones!!!!

Best to you :-)
