Bi-polar ,fish oil ,lithium and PKC

Posted by Ezmoney on July 15, 2005, at 16:15:33

PKC is an enzyme that has been found to be hyperactive in the brains of people with manic depression. There are several sub groups of PKC.Lithium and fish oil inhibit PKC.PKC is also hyperactive in anxiety disorders.Inhibition of PKC stops mania cold. The ventromedial frontal cortex of the left forebrain ,shows damage in people with bi-polar illness.Damage is the result of overstimulation. This area causes mania and panic. Dekopate effects other PKC sub groups that litium does not.May work when lithium does not.

You are absolutely right. There are other things that effect PKC expression. PKC is related to the inositol system. An inositol reduced diet can affect PKC expression. THe herb quercetin is a PKC inhibitor too. I don't think that carbamazepine shares this property though.

Look up PKC and lithium.PKC is part of the second messenger system.Low levels of inositol inside brain cells may cause mania.Taking large doses of inositol ,appears to inhibit PKC.However ,some blame inositol for causeing mania.Inositol is used to remove DAG from the cells.DAG and calcium activate PKC.PKC also prolongs the duration of serotonin in the synapases.

Unfortunately, lithium *decreases* content in the brain. See.

I was under the impression that inositol activates PKC, and that lithium de-activates PKC by through lowering brain inositol content.

They belive that the inositol mono-phoshate enzyme is hyperactive in people with bi-polar.That it breaks down and recycles inositol too fast.Nobody really knows how this can cause mania. However ,high doses of inositol help panic attacks,OCD and depression.Inositol is part of the second messenger system. The second messengers are made from it.IP3 being the one that releases calcium and actvates the release of neurochemicals.

High doses of inositol very quickly sent my bipolar mother into a manic state. SSRI's as well, are helpful for depression and OCD but generally not for mania.

Apparently mixing IP6 with Inositol is anxiolytic and allows you to drastically reduce the amount of Inositol needed to treat panic attacks. I don't know if this has an effect on mania, I suppose it still doesn't help.

The dosages were something like 4grams of IP6 and 1.8 grams of Inositol. Very much lower than using Inositol at 12-18grams. I wish I could find the link in my bookmarks.

So I'm diagnosed with BP II because I have extreme anxiety which is supposed to be my expression of mania...how is that possible if inositol calms anxiety but induces mania? I don't have a very good understanding of all this but if inositol works for anxiety I would want to take it unless it would induce more anxiety for me..???
