Gingko Biloba And Bipolar..is it Dangerous?

Posted by Nickengland on July 1, 2005, at 8:07:28

Hello there!

Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on whether the herb Gingko Biloba could be somewhat risky in the use of bipolar..i.e could it de-stabilise someone, possibly work towards triggering mania...something like that.

I'm on Topamax and although my cognitive functioning is not that badly affected at all...I would still like to try and give my memory and brain function a boost if possible and am thinking of using Gingko Biloba - If anyone knows that people with bipolar should not use this herb for any particular reasons I would be very grateful if you could let me know..

Many thanks & look forward to any replies on this subject :-)

Ginkgo is actually contraindicated in epelepsy due to its propensity to lower seizure threshold.

For me, it had no effect on elation, but it did make me irritable. It does have a dopaminergic effect.

See, "manic psychosis linked to ginkgo use"

Hi linkadge

Thanks for posting that :-)

I've baught what seems to be alow dose extract (60mg) tablets so i'll try taking 1 of these a day and see what happens.. I've baught a really cheap brand brand aswell so theres the chance that it won't even do anything because of the quality....it seems pretty expensive stuff over here in England if you want to buy a fairly good brand and take it on a regular basis..

Oh well worth a try to to keep the memory in shape!

Kind regards

Nick

No, I agree to try it yourself and see. I have combined it with different meds, some good some bad.

So Ginkgo made you irritable, Link? Maybe that's contributing to my irritability. I might cut it out and see if things get a bit smoother.
