Supplements/ low metabolism-Larry Hoover /anyone

Posted by andromeda on June 15, 2005, at 11:51:05

Hi,
Larry, you are greatly appreciated on sharing your knowledge.
I want to thank you for posting the website for DNA Drug Reaction Profiles and the medications that are listed on that site. This is from posts you had answered on Psycho-Babble.
Even though I am unable to afford testing, I know I am a poor metabolizer of most of those meds that I have taken on that list.
Do you know if a list for alternatives is available or if you have an idea which one's would be safer to try?
I am BPII and currently have been raised up to 150 mg Lamictal. Lately I have tried Fish Oil and NADH at low doses with the higher Lamictal but became tearful and irritable right away. Fish Oil increased libido but with the other, who cares. I have little to no motivation. Some OCD in excessive ruminating. Problem in getting out and going places but once am out do OK. Impossible to be center of attention or in front of a crowd.
I don't know whether to ask Doc for Buspar (?), wait and increase Lamictal to 200 mg and then add in AD again or try an alternative.
Benzo's make me less motivated, sleepy and more depressed.
With increase in Lamictal so far I sleep less, no longer need Ambien for sleep, have less suicidal thoughts and less breakthrough crying compared to when I was on 50 mg. My moods have stabilized into the depressive phase. Very little hypomania or "normal".
Thanks for any help possible.

Hi there! I saw your post today and I had some info that may be helpful in your BPII, my son has that, BPD and Asperger's Syndrome (Autism spectrum Disorder, mild). However, he is on Lamictal and it helps. He is also on trileptal, another anti-s. medicine, and that seems to help. Do you take the Lamictal all at once, or split it? It works better seemingly when we started dividing the doses into 3 separate divided doses. Same with the Trileptal. Some info on this on th web, but look for the more of the studies done recently. The other meds he is on is Risperdal, and that really helps with the mood swings and dips and ups. Clonidine is a mild blood pressure med, however he is taking it as he was having some emotional issues, and we may take him off that, maybe not.
I know it sounds like a lot of meds, but he has not talked about suicide (he was also in Behavioral rehabil.)or had any major issues in the year he started taking this particular combo. He was on others and they did not help- Lexapro made him more depressed and manic and suicidal, so we immediately took that away. Abilify was alright, but mostly used for depression, not mania.
It has taken a while, but if you do have a MD prescribing meds for you, you may want to ask about those first mentioned as they have really helped and we just adjust and monitor Milligrams depending on his progress.
Hope this helps!

Hi again. Sorry, I neglected to tell you the Clonidine is really helpful for the anger/mood part if you have this as well. Risperdal helps a bit with OCD as he has been really losing the OCD "tics" he used to have (odd, random attachments and hoarding watches and clocks all kinds whatever he could find, then arrange them, clean them, repeat.) Anyway, that has greatly subsided since the med changes.

Pity Lar go blocked again. I'm sure he could help with a lot of questions here when/if he comes back. No wonder it's been so quiet.
I've no idea what happened or why as I can't take looking at admin. Not worth the way it effects me. TJ helped me slowly learn to resist that temptation over the past year or more, and it does help lots not looking at stuff that just upsets me and doesn't help anyone really.
Thanks TJ, and hope you're keeping well Lar, and whatever happened is OK now.

I had a quick peek in at admin to see what all the fuss is about.........LOL, what a soul destroying place that board is!!

You'd think people with such problems as we all have would find more constructive ways to spend their time than spending hours on a board discussing how the site which is set up to help them is run......still, each to their own I guess.

How about if I call you all names and at the end of my post request a DNP from you all....LOLOL, I am sooo cruel ;-)))

Lar, see you soon buddy :-)

Jan.....just got in, its 6am and i'm bushed (aussie term for cream crackered I believe). I'll catch you over the weekend.

panthers,
Thank you for helping out. I go to my MD next week. I am on 5 mg of Abilify and may increase that to 15. Resperdal is on the list so don't want to try it. Have never tried Trileptel or Clonidine, I will study up on it and mention it to my doc. I am glad your son is getting the help he needs. It's always good to see parents supporting thier kid in this.
Will taking Clonidine affect my BP? I have good BP.
I might throw in DMAE? to see if it might help with apathy. Alternatives can be kind of expensive, especially if you find out you can't take them after just a few pills.
Thanks again
Andromeda
