ginkgo biloba and sexual dysfunction

Posted by greg diamond on March 2, 2005, at 21:18:21

Anyone else tried this herb for increasing blood flow and reversing some of the anorgasmia involved with SSRI's? I just started yesterday, and I'll keep everyone posted.

I tried it once and there might have been some benefit.

Re-submit your post using the "Alternatives" link at the top of this page. There you will get more responses about Ginkgo since all posts about non-prescription drug treatment alternatives are supposed to go there.

I would be very interested in your results. Thanks.

I've never tried Ginkgo, but my old MD said that it's ability to benefit the brain were greatly exaggerated.

Your old MD was talking out of something he should spend more time sitting on IMO!!

There is rakes of evidence that ginkgo biloba improves circulation, and its also well known that the brains health is directly proportional to its blood and therefore oxygen supply.

As for the sexual improvements, i've never had problems in the erection department, but yes I took ginkgo for around 12 months and did notice an improvement. To be honest though, the greatest possible aid you could give you "manhood" is to stop smoking (thats assuming of course you smoke). Lets just say its effect would be better than an intrevenous feed of viagra.

aww..
I suspect it's got to do with too much acetylcholine. This makes a everlasting supply of NO I think, the key bit of viagra.
Anyway not sure ..but I suspect its along those lines:-) possibly fit.
I'm trying to understand this stuff today regarding circulation..trying being the main word there:-)
I think smoking and acetylcholine fit together as well, I know there's nicotinic receptors for ACh, so I guess tthe smoking competes for the ACh receptors.(at least the nicotinic ones IF i'M RIGHT??)
http://www.news-medical.net/?id=22
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12446934&dopt=Abstract(for anyone who can interpret this stuff)

"With repeated nicotine dosage the body adapts to what it regards as extra acetylcholine in an attempt to restore normal function. One way it does this is to grow more acetylcholine receptors. "
http://yourmedicalsource.com/library/smoking/SMO_whatis.html

and then when ya stop smoking, the ACh (if you have lots) can hit all those extra recEptors and not have to compete with nicotine.

ACh causes vasodilation..one way is via NO. other ways as well I think.

Also as I'm on this anti fluoride in water thingy at present..there's a wierdo fluoride phosphate compound that irreversibly inhibits AChE..so if it works that way and our bodies can synthesize it??..that would cause high ACh and produce the effects.
Hence maybe cut out flouride if possible(it's raining here and I've got saucepans and large bowls out collecting rainwater :-))...no idea really...just looking at it, it's something that fits if its possible anyway

Oh and avoid lecithin and choline supps...
I didn't like the lecithin granules/iron combo a while ago I think? :-))

Took it for a couple 'o weeks while on a Celexa/ Wellbutrin combo a few years back. Never did anything for me. Could not have an orgasm if I tried. I don't remember the dosage amount I took though. My psychiatrist gave it to me. Perhaps I just didn't take enough, if there is that much evidence out there supporting its efficacy. Good luck getting your game back.

I never took ginkgo for sex, but it did/does do a few other things for me. If I take 2 ginkgo caps, I get quite 'speedy' and do things very efficiently and fast using my brain (oh, what, I have one???). It's excellent combined with siberian ginseng and/or gotu kola - it seems to have more of an effect this way.

However, I did notice when taking it, I was a bit more prone to anxiety after awhile, crave fatty foods (which is fine as I'm low-carbing at present), and did have better more intense orgasms.

On another note, not to harp on about the old fish oil again (sorry people), but this did the most for sex drive for me (more than the ginkgo).
