Lamictal, SAMe and Inositol

Posted by tendency on February 4, 2005, at 21:36:37

Have BPII and depression along with ADD (I call it the 'triple crown' ;-)). The lamictal seems to have smoothed out my moods but I still often suffer from periods of low to moderate depression. In the past I tried SAMe (before being on the lamictal) and it made me quite manic.

Today, however, it suddenly occured to me that I might tolerate it better now that I'm on the lamictal.

I've also been reading several threads on the alternative board about the mood elevating and anxiety reducing properties of inositol.

So, (rambling on a bit) today I purchased a 20 pack of jarrow SAMe and an 8oz jar of Country Life inositol. Took 400mg SAMe and 2 tsp. inositol and I'm feeling a major boost in mental energy, clarity and mood elevation. The combo has really 'amped' me up (not manic though, so far) and I wondering if others have had similar experiences with prescription and supplement combos.

Matt

Ok, now I'm feeling a tad manic. Perhaps I need to modulate the SAMe a tad..

I'm interested in hearing more about how you're doing with Lamictal SAMe inositol (which I never heard of). I'm on gabitril (mood stabilizer) but experiencing some depression and have wondered about adding either SAMe or St. John's Wort. The SJW, by the way, made me hypomanic in the past when I was not on a mood stabilizer.

Keep us updated.

Are you Bipolar?
If so you aren't supposed to take Sam-E as it induces mania.

I've read some posts on how inositol can have a calming and mild mood elevation effect and my ituition is that it will have a sysnergistic effect with SAMe.

So far I have in fact found that the two of them appear to 'potentiate' each other with the inositol taking the edge off the SAMe for me as well as relaxing me.

This was the condition I found myself in: the lamictal helped stabilize me but there was persistant low to mid-grade depression bothering me. The SAMe always made me manic prior to lamictal.

Good news is (and it is early) the SAMe has in fact really reduced the depressions (mayve from a 5 on a scale of 1 - 10, to a 1) and the inositol helps take the edge off the SAMe. I also find the inositol to have a mild mood elevating effect and acts as a mild anti-anxiety agent for me.

Yes, I'm BPII. Before lamictal SAMe definitely worsened mania. However, the lamictal seems to counter act this effect leaving the anti-depressive qualities of SAMe intact.
