Jubilee,

I picked up some Tryptophan at the vitamin shop last night. I mean, MKB has been telling us to get this stuff for how long now? I guess I figured that with the 5HTP and everything else I was taking that I just didn't want to add anything else cause I am spending more money on supplements -- way more -- than on food or clothes or shelter at this point, but it calmed my stomach a wee bit after the first dose. I mean, don't exceed the recommended doseage or anything to hurry it along cause I doubt that's gonna help. But it is worth a trying the Tryptophan, I think. I couldn't believe that it really helped. ;-)....stubborn, I am, I guess, and burned out from feelins so bad for so long, too. My joints have been hurting so badly...and then they just stop hurting when my stomach stops hurting. It says right on the label, though, to be sure to take with some carbohydrate and to make sure to take good quality B vitamins during the day.

I hope this helps you a little....

Just thought that I would reinforce what she was saying cause it really helped relieve that anxious feeling, and I think it could or it might help you too.

Many prayers!!

Bebe

Hi Bebe,
I'm so glad you were able to find Tryptophan. You were really able to buy it at a store? That's encouraging, as I thought people had to order it by mail. I'm glad it's available. It has done wonders for me.

If you go to Google Scholar and type in Tryptophan, you will find tons of studies that have been done on Tryptophan. The evidence is conclusive, and I believe pharmaceutical companies knew that years ago when they started marketing antidepressants. Tryptohan aids not only sleep, mild depression, and anxiety, but SAD, inattention, learning problems, anger and irritability, and who knows what else. I love it! It is so wonderful to wake up in the morning refreshed, to be in control of my thoughts and reactions, and to feel friendlier. I haven't tried the 5HTP, but from what I've read, the Tryptophan is better and less likely to cause serotonin syndrome. However, you do need to educate yourself before you start combining it with prescription medicines. If you want to know more, read the posts on the Alternative board or read the product information at www.healthrecovery.com.

Hi Bebe, Is tryptophan something in elivil I wonder? There is a chronic pain killer in elivil, and until I got off the highest dose 250 mgs( as I was a seriously depressed person before God delivered me 2 years ago) and then I started having to take pain meds for a condition I am sure I already had. It does cause weight gain, and for some like me dry mouth. I was on it 17 years. Then came effexor so I could loose weight and it was good for depression and I am so thankful that I dont have to deal with that dep. again , though elivil always saved the day and I woke up so happy daily and couldnt wait to get out of bed and read my bible and have my coffee. Effexor never did that , but narcodics , which I have to take just to not scream and cry all day (and possible not take my life) causes depression. Fibro has beem much better so much I've felt healed! Now I HAVE 2 BULGING DISKS TO DEAL WITH WHICH SHOTS PAIN down my legs. Big letters unentended! Are you all the way off? E mail me as Ill be doing so to you after I check this old grief address, over the loss of my son in Feb, who I am grieving even more due to effexor drop. Later and God Bless. Jubilee

I don't have a definite answer for you, but I doubt tryptophan is in Elavil. It occurs naturally in many foods, but I don't think it is combined with other medicines.

I don't think there is tryptophan in Elevil, though I wouldn't be the one to know that for sure. It is found naturally in turkey, milk, oats, and some other things; so who know?

Yup, I am off Effexor completely because I very innocently stopped taking it one day when I had ruled out all other possible causes of my not being able to lose weight.

Three days later, when I felt as though I were in hell, physically, mentally, and emotionally; when every cell in my being hurt to the point of screaming, after doing a Google search to see if I could figure out what could possibly be wrong with me, I found this website. I lived. :-)

Blessings,
Bebe

Yes, definitely. However, I have a bit of a sinus infection right now, so I'm not feeling too well. It's hard to judge what the Tryptophan is doing when you're sick. I'm not suffering from anxiety, but I'm frustrated because I don't want to be sick for Christmas!

Well , doc Bob would probably appriciate my suggestions for elivil as a safe anti depressant over in this section. You do gain weight , but it wipes out doom and gloom. Jubilee

Elavil as in amitriptyline? Amitriptyline is an old tricyclic antidepressant, I have taken it at night to help with nerve pain and sleep. I can't imagine taking 250 mg though, 50 mg and I'm hungover the next day.

I've been taking it for 3 or 4 years but not everyday anymore. I've tried but the hangover effect never really got any better. I'm super sensitive to anything that might make you sleepy though.

Gromit - Yeah, I don't know why I didn't give it a chance a long time ago, maybe that was why, because I sort of feel it might be the lesser of evils when it comes to ADs. I too am really sensitive to some ... too bad the 'hungover feeling'; could it be dosage or maker? Tks cf

I was on elavil( yould think I would at least know how to spell it HA!) for 17 yrs until switched to effexor and it was working excelent and I was incredibly happy on it , except for the approx 40 lb weight gain , which I didnt hold back much on eating. but I took 5 50's a day and was the epitomy of agitated severe depresion. It was doom and gloom in 2 days of of it and it worked in 2 days when Iwent back on it . ,I can't imaagine 17 years on effexor and how dead I would be if it ca destroy your liver in 8. but I have been greatly delivered from what ever caused my depression as of 2 and a half years now , as God healed me when I pledged money to TBN Christian TV. In fact , that little thing I did changed my whole life for the better and I wont say anymore , but God can and does change lives. Without Him I never would have gotten off effexor , but I felt led one day strongly to look it up on the internet , as I guess I'm just not that smart. Heck, I need a big God taking care of me ,Jubilee

It's funny how different we all are, 250 mg of amitriptyline would make me comatose. In fact I noticed the pills I have are 25 mg not 50, the Trazodone are the 50's, so you were doing well on 10X the dose that I can't tolerate. OTOH I was taking 300-800 mg of Provigil along with 200 mg caffeine, ginseng, tyrosine and still had very little energy or focus.
