can carnitine mimic cortisol?

Posted by raybakes on November 22, 2004, at 13:56:23

'L-carnitine: A nutritional modulator of glucocorticoid receptor functions.'

"There is evidence that, at high doses, L-carnitine might mimic some of the biological activities of glucocorticoids, especially immunomodulation."

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the reference. I read the article but I am too ignorant to understand it. If you have time, could you explain what would it mean for us if L-carnitine can mimic cortisol?

Not sure of the fine detail, but the abstract claims that carnitine can activate receptors for glucocorticoids like cortisol, and also can reduce inflammatory cytokines, like cortisol does too!

Thanks Ray,

Looks like carnitine is a good one for me then too.
I've had to use cortisol for inflammation in the past week after going off all supps for a break.
I need a lot less than previously though, so maybe my adrenals are recovering. I also don't have the symptoms of low adrenals ..like shaking, vomiting etc..which is good.

Any combo you have worked out for this . I've still to go back thru your old posts and make a list of any combo that didn't work :-)

I seem to be needing the methyl factors, glutathione(from the foods I was craving) and carnitine sounds like something I may need more of too.
So far all I've tried is l-lysine (by itself or with l-tyrosine)..but L-lysine taken like this didn't seem to have any effect at all.

Hi again, fancy meeting you here!!

Jan I tried several carnitine brands, but only the cardiovascular research one worked for me. The only thing I'm doing for my adrenals is to try to improve my mitochondria - carnitine, carnosine, omega 3s, methyl donors and factors - the horny goat weed gives me an amazing boost as well.

L-carnitine is a direct agonist at glucocorticoid receptors, but concentration is important here. If the dose is high enough, it acts like cortisol.

The full-text article says they're talking about doses as high as 600mg/kg body weight. For a seventy kilogram (about 150 lb.) adult, that's over 40 grams a day.

Health Canada prohibits the importation of l-carnitine into Canada, as far as I know, so the issue is moot for me.

Larry,

FYI. I have found a place in Canada where I can get Acetyl L-Carntine. If ever you decide you want to try some, I will get you the contact number.

Larry,

Here is one Canadian source where you can get L-Carnitine (but not Acetyl L-Carntine), if you ever want to try it. I have ordered other things from them, but haven't ordered any Carnitine yet. I am going to get Acetyl L-Carnitine from another source I have located.
