Posted by linkadge on September 30, 2004, at 17:11:13

I hear that some people say GABA supplement works, and other people say that it doesn work.

Some studies say it does not cross the Blood brain barrier ??

Does anyone have any comments ??

Dr. Ray Sahelian seems to think that taking GABA by itself is not a terribly efficient way to get it into the brain but he's open to the idea that some of it may get past the BBB (because of the people he has talked to who swear that it does calm them down).

I tried GABA, after getting sick and tired of all the serotonergic drugs I had been on, some time ago. It did absolutely nothing for my anxiety. I then read several papers citing that GABA couldn't pass the BB barrier. However, that seems to be questioned by recent research. I think Larry H. had a thread about it, if you want to search the archives.
I did find that Picamilon helped somewhat (GABA with Niacin to help it cross the BBB). However,it is not available in Canada, and I had to order it online (always risking it would be stopped by customs). It was also expensive. So I stopped using it and went back to the pharmaceutical aids you and I have already discussed!
O yes, I also tried Relora (which you can buy in Canada), it did absolutely nothing as well. Aaaagh the experiments I've used on my poor brain!
Good luck,
Jas
