Libido issues...

Posted by Indie on July 24, 2004, at 13:04:44

I have a female friend who is suffering libido issues. She has no depression, anxiety or other issues (one of the lucky ones) she just has no libido. Of course this issue is not making her boyfriend very happy. She was diagnosed with narcolepsy years ago, but has been off of stimulants for a couple of years now without problems, so I think the diagnoses is questionable.

Does anybody know of any natural remedies that might help. She is a bit sceptical of taking anything other than vitamins, including herbs and amino acids, but she is getting desperate for something that might work.

Yes, I *highly* recommend something called 'Tribestan' available from www.bodybuilding.com. Works outstandingly.

Is that for both men and women?

Maca is supposed to be good for men and women.
It's an adaptogen so it would balance her hormone levels. The only place to get it is Whole World Botanicals on-line. That's what the best holistic doctors here recommend.

(DHEA would probably help more dramatically but it would increase her male hormone levels. A lot of doctors recommend taking this hormone for libido problems.)

Hmmm..Tribestan (www.sopharma.com) works by increasing leutinizing hormone which in turn signals the testes (if I recall the literature that I read correctly) to produce more testosterone. Guess that would be a 'no' for helping females..

Here's a great layman's overview of sex hormone modulation.

Has she tried moderate/high dose (120mg) of ginkgo? It worked for me, but then I had to stop it because of anxiety. Best thing for my libido though, and I wouldn't even let my husband come near me before.

You can use it intermittently, eh? Long enough to get the effect, then take a break. Ginkgo affects steroid synthesis, including cortisol and testosterone, but you don't want to overdo it.

Is the 4 months on and then one month off schedule ok here? Or is that more for adaptogens?

I think ginkgo shouldn't be used for more than a month straight...just my opinion. More like licorice....it messes with things we don't really understand.

Adaptogens use the four-month rule, but again, that's just a direct transfer of the Eastern medical system's use directives.
