Opionions on Li Orotate...Chemist? Larry Hoover?

Posted by sac on August 4, 2004, at 19:59:21

Hello, I would like to know if you have any experience with Lithium Orotate for depression/Bipolar II. I have been on Lamictal and Depakote over the last 3 years and have discontinued because I can't stand the side effects I get... Depakote makes me more depressed and Lamictal tends to give me agitation/anxiety although it does stabilize my moods. I suffer mostly from chronic depression with periods of hypomania. Mostly, I just want relief from my ongoing mood swings that prevent me from enjoying my life and children. I tried prescription Lithium at 300mgs evening and felt strange on it so I stopped. I am starting to do my own research into alternative therapies and began taking Lithium Orotate (Serenity brand) 1 tablet 3 x day. I have to say, it is helping my daily mood swings and irritability. I feel level headed and calmer. Is this possible? What is the consensus on Li Orotate? Can it really be effective for mild Bipolars? Thanks for any feedback. -Stacey

They're both off for two weeks (Larry's on vacation and Chemist has been blocked for two weeks.) BarbaraCat knows a lot about this and may be able to help you.

Thank you. (nm) » KaraS

I think that BabaraCat is also mild BPII and has had success with a combination of lithium and St. John's Wort. She hasn't been over to the Alternative board lately. You might want to do a search and I'm sure you'll see what she has written about it in the recent past.

Oh, I think I got lucky on that post. I was a tad racy with my language. If you look just below this post in the list at the bottom of the page (way down there), you'll see Barbaracat's precautionary tale about the failure of lithium orotate to stabilize her mood.

Oh it's possible to feel more level-headed and calmer, but it's really hard to say if the mood-stabilization effect will be sufficient if you get into a stressful situation. One simple thing you can do is use fish oil. Lots of fish oil. Take with your largest meal of the day, or split between meals, to avoid fishy burps.

Thank you for you response. I am also taking about 6-8 grams omega 3's daily. Actually, since I first posted my question about Lithium Orotate I've had another difficult turn with my moods. As you said, it just may not be enough for serious stabilization. -Stacey
