WHAT IS THE BEST KAVA KAVA? THAT WORKS!!

Posted by clairey on January 14, 2004, at 9:05:14

I know with kava kava you have to buy the good stuff for it to work!!
tried normal caps but they are useless
i want something that will make me relaxed, not drowsy, and aware of everything that goes on still. And something to get rid of my anxiety would be good!!
Thanks

Here's a description from talking to someone who has spent some time in the Pacific Islands.
The real Kava..as made by the pacific islanders involves digging up some roots..slashing them to get more than the soaking, then wrapping the roots in cloth(like an old towel) and sticking them in a bucket of water...which becomes muddy as they haven't washed the roots.
Then you just remove the roots and drink. It tastes like grassy mud and poison mixed together I'm told. Basically yuk! so you don't drink it for the taste or refreshment..as in beer. I know I've tried it many years ago in the Sth Pacific too, but only a sip to be polite like, and yes it tasted yuk.
It begins by kinda numbing your lips and tongue immediately, and the more you drink the more of your tongue gets kinda numb. The yuk flavour absorbs into your tongue and you can't get rid of it.
Its best taken just near bedtime as when you wake up in the morning there is no hangover effects at all..but if you drink it earlier, about a couple of hours after drinking it you feel "wierd" as you go thru a letdown. Bad feeling was the best description I could get.
The natives seem to only drink it near bedtime. It does relax you, but doesn't make you noticeably drowsy, perhaps a little.
Basically they drink it as the local beer tastes even worse I gather ..and the imported beer is way out of the price range.
I heard they tried to encourage the aborigines at Arnhem Land to drink Kava instead of beer (all the natives of the Sth Pacific and aborigines in Oz appear to not tolerate beer...no ability to be able to tell when to stop and very angry drunks)...but I think they found it increased heart and other medical problems.
From the above, I guess it mustn't be TOO addictive as the natives don't seem to lie around drinking it all day, like say beetle nut gets chewed in NG,...but if they only use in mostly before bed at night..it must mean the letdown during the day is not worth it. Note- they have a sleep for 2 hrs or so in the middle of the day and the natives in St Pacific don't seem to drink kava then. Perhaps its good if you have night time anxiety? or problems relaxing to get to sleep? I'll probably give it a go myself in a couple of months..if I can stand the taste enough.
OK, here's a link to the Arnhem Land stuff

looks like it can be addictive.

Be carefull when buying Kava, theres a lot of crap products out there as I found to my cost!

There are a lot of places selling raw Kava root on the internet, but the quality of them is mostly very poor.

I finaly found a place that really sells high quality Kava root. Type 'kava for your health' into google and you should find this place that sells high quality kava at reasonable prices.
Extraction is still a problem though.
Don't use hot water because it destroyes Kava tones, the active ingriedient.

Ames San Vie posted a really good Kava reciepe a few months ago. Try doing a search for it. He say by far the best kava is a brand that you order from Hawaii. Unfortunately I don't remeber the name of the company. Maybe try a search or make a post asking him directly. He said not to substitute any kind of other kava for this particular kind

"My dad ordered it as he likes the odd smoke in the evening to wind down!!"

mmmm I have loved the odd smoke (if what I think you are referring to), but unfortunately I gave it up recently for a while to see if it has any affect on my condition getting better. I have had one doctor tell me that I smoke because it is my personal way of self medicating for depression. Sure worked like a charm up until recently :)

Yep i was referring to the odd smoke!! ha ha. Think kava would be a good alternative to the other, as you cant allways get hold of the stuff straight away (as they dont tend to sell it in shops!! damn ha ha) but kava may fill the gap if its any good.
Mabie you should try kava instead? :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I will try Kava as it might help with my sleep problems. I think marijuana serves dual purposes as an antidepressant for some (me for many many years) but can also work as a depressant at the same time (if that makes any sense). I always enjoyed it more than alcohol for some reason, but I have been giving it a break for the first time in 10 years to see if it has any benefical effect on my condition.

It does relax you though dosnt it!! i allways enjoyed it more when i had been drinking!! whereas many cant do the both at once as they 'whitey' (ya know mess up and be sick) just makes me giggle like a mad women!! i have given up on all the drugs i used to take (not good 4 me) but weed is something that has benefits i think!! unlike the others.

http://www.konakavafarm.com/price.html

Try this kava! i have just ordered some and i was recommended this one, as its from hawaii.

Good luck hope you feel better soon! :)

The best kava that I have tried is the www.konakavafarm.com the mahakea kava- its pretty amazing!! Ive tried the stuff in the health food stores with zero effect. The only problem with the mahakea kava from hawaii is that it is really expensive- i think its only good for a few servings. It says you are supposed to mix approx 1 cup of kava with 4 cups of water, which makes only like 2 drinks- and theres only a few cups in the bag.
Does anyone know if there is any cheaper kava? Maybe the stuff from Giai site? thanks!

It wont matter brain wise (if you get wgat i mean there) but they dont reccomend it as it can be harsher on the liver.
Kava with something like tryptophan, 5htp, inositol would be ok

What about kava and Effexor XR? Has anyone tried that? I'm cutting back on the effexor, and am a little anxious, don't want to make it worse by worrying if taking something while still on a lose dose would do more harm than good. I'd like to have a cup of kava tea in the evening before bed. Think I'd live?
