severe night sweats/disrupted sleep-med s/e??

Posted by loolot on December 27, 2003, at 13:35:02

I am waking up every morning at 5 am drenched in sweat for some reason. Sometimes I feel like I have to eat something in order to fall asleep again, like a piece of fruit. This seems to have gotten worse lately.
Is this because of meds and what can I do to stop it? Any supps to take?
I am on 450 wellbutrin, 25 mcg of cytomel, and 36 mg of strattera (the most recent addition) all split in doses 2x/day. Any ideas?? Iam wondering if these meds are messing with my hormones?

One reason could be your estrogen levels are too low..which could be caused by med interference. If estrogen drops too low you may wake up in night sweats..as in perimenopause. Only one reason though.

Thanks Tealady. I ordered a home test for hormones and cortisol so maybe that will tell me something. Its a saliva test.
I guess I should do a swab when I wake up in the middle of the night?
Is there anything to take to regulate estrogen levels?

Hi,
Just a suggestion.
If you are on the pill, you could ask your doc if you could try a higher dose estrogen pill...they vary, but I can't remember offhand the US names for the higher dose estrogen pill alternatives. This may be enough.
Re : saliva tests
Some docs /researchers think that the swab in the saliva tests in the US give false high values for estrogen..they think they are only reliable for indicating the cortisol ratios in a 4 times a day cortisol test. So they prefer blood levels. Also the timing ..like which day of cycle as well as times of day (noon is supposedly the highest for estrogen, I think) is important.

Thanks tealady.
I just started my period so I have realized that you might be right about the estrogen. It seems like the nightsweats have gotten progressively worse the week and ahalf before my period, and hopefully better now.
Do you think I should try to test my estrogen levels right before my period when I have the sweats?
I dont use the pill because it makes me really depressed, unfortunately
