Are you a man or a sheep?

Posted by Ron Jones on October 17, 2003, at 14:14:23

Something is bad wrong with all this .Is there a cure for any form of mental illness? Is mental illness for life? Do you have the brains to understand and read scientific research on mental illness and the brain. Can you read at all .Can you think and reason like a normal person. Can you ask for and demand a cure? Why are you paying good money to doctors who have no answers. Is there no trained scientist ,who has a mental illness. Can we not work with them to find the truth. Can you take the truth? You seem to be like a dog chaseing his tail.I have noticed that people lose all ability to reason like normal people when mental illness strikes. That 90% of people with mental illness are just unable to help themselves. They have no idea what the hell has gone wrong. They become sheep .No one knows the cause of any mental illness and no one has found any cure.If a cure is to be found then you will have to do it.Are you willing and able to do this? Can you ever be normal again? Were you ever normal.Find me a scientist and I will move the world.I will never retrat,I will never surrender.Victory or death!William Barrett Travis ,The Alamo.1836

Yes, I do.

> Is there no trained scientist ,who has a mental illness?

Yes. Me. What do you want to talk about?

Please tone down the rhetoric. It's offensive to me.

Keeping in mind the idea that the idea here is not to post anything that could lead others to feel accused or put down, could you please rephrase that? Thanks,

Bob

Dearest Ron,
I am a trained scientist (medical biological chemist if you want to know) in fact theres quite a few of us out there who trained before, during or after the development of our mental illnesses.

One thing you need to know. Most people on this board are not sheep. Most of us have spent many, many hours researching mental illnesses and are slowly and thoroughly working through the many ideas on this board and through other research to find the solution that best suits them. And people well read in the subject know how to look past pharmaceutical sales pitches to find the real story.

The facts are:
there are some people with mental illness who can treat themselves through CBT or other therapies and a healthy lifestyle. Everyone who is physically capable should start with this and see how far they can go. This is generally the best solution for people with situational depression ie that triggered by a traumatic even in their liv

second fact.
there are many, many studies pointing to a direct link between genetics (although its always a combo of factors) and mental illness. This is especially true for disorders like bipolar. IF you look at my family tree, theres much mental illness except that my relatives these days don't seem to be dying in mental hospitals

third fact.
mental illnesses cause the brain structure and function to change. If you go and look up any mental health journals you'll find a plethora of studies on which changes we already know about.
We don't know all of the nooks and crannies of how the brain works so its still early days on the direct changes in the brain and body that trigger mental illness

fourth fact
medications and natural therapies do work for many people.we know this not only from the reports of the people who take them but from double blind neurological studies and scans of people before and after treatment. yes there are a number of side effects with some drugs and there is no miracle drug or "natural treatment" for everyone but treatment is getting better all the time

fifth fact
a number of people need a combo of meds, therapy and a healthy lifestyle just to stay alive. I'm one of them. I've fought incredibly hard to get this far and will continue to work hard on my health.

btw
whats your diagnosis and training in the scientific field?

if you want us to follow everything you say without reservation then you are expecting us to be sheep.

I've read probably most things you've pointed out and taken them on board and I still have the opinion that I have. You're welcome to your opinion. I'm welcome to mine

Dr Bob, I am feeling persecuted by this guy too.
Is there really a need to ask *Larry* to tone himself down? Mr Jones is definitely the one who could do with a cool-off.
Oh!
I get it -
Mr Jones is making me feel accused and put down!
(Is that what's needed?)
he's also being really counter-productive.

Close, but not quite. Can you make it into an I-statement?

And could you please rephrase that, too? Thanks,

Bob

I'm sorry, Dr. Bob, if I don't get it right, but even raising it with you via email didn't clarify matters for me. Or, for that matter, why the original poster didn't get your attention.

Rephrased:
I feel offended by the tone of your remarks.

I was wondering too, until I saw that the exact same post got a PBC on Psycho-Babble (medication board). I'm guessing that's why.

I'm a sheep. What's wrong with sheep ?
