Probably not going

Posted by Deneb on March 21, 2007, at 19:42:41

In reply to Re: the dates, posted by Deneb on March 21, 2007, at 14:43:26

My Mom won't let me go. She doesn't want me going by myself. She also doesn't want me talking to Babblers so much. She wants me to talk to people who don't have problems. I told her everyone has problems.

I want to see Bob again. :-(

Oh well. Maybe I will see Bob some other time.

:-( That stinks.

> Why do it around the APA if we aren't presenting? Won't you be too busy then anyway?

That is a good point, and I don't know that this years' Babble birthday has been set in stone for then yet. We could always have voting like before, but we'd better hurry.

I can think of some reasons, though - and I may be way off base here in even trying to guess what Dr. Bob might be thinking - to do it around the APA:

--maybe because he's been traveling a lot and by combining attendance at the APA w/Babble party - kill 2 birds w/one stone? (one less separate trip?)
--maybe because at one time he/we said something about moving it around to make it more possible for more people, and now it's the West coasts' turn, and SD is there and so is the APA?
--maybe because some Babblers have already been planning for San Diego so he's just going with that thought until he hears otherwise....

...which he just did from you!

I always wish everyone who wants to could go, despite time, work, family, money and all that. But that would be only in a perfect world.

Duh....AM, I just realized

You were talking about the dates, not necessarily the place.

I am particularly dense and inarticulate today.

Sorry.

What's the objection to the place? San Diego really is great, beautiful, interesting. I lived a couple hours away for about 7 years and visited a friend there often.

Maybe people want a vote?

just curious

I think it's better to talk to people who *know* they have problems than to talk to people who do and don't know it.

Yep. That will probably be the key factor for me. At the moment, the balance is tipped to not being able to go. If only it were SF. Or Chicago in June when my hubby is traveling there for business. Or Southern FL where I know folks with whom I could stay...

Bah, money. It would help if I were actually earning some instead of just draining it away.

That's it for me as well. It'd cost at least $1000-$1200 to go, and it's hard to justify that for a couple of days.

If it was during the summer, I might be able to incorporate it into a family trip.

Plane tickets for me are about $600 CAD. Four nights accommodation is about $160 USD. (It could be $80, but I want to stay in a private room this time). Plus cost of transportation and tickets to attractions and food and stuff. I estimate that would be about $300. So it would be about $1100-1200 for me. That's about a month's worth of pay for me. Is it worth it to spend that much just to see Bob? Probably not. Sorry Bob, I love you, but... I think I would spend $500 to see Bob. ((((((Bob)))))) LOL It seems like no one I know will be going so I probably won't go either.

The cost is a bit of an issue -- although I could room with someone, I think -- but the biggest issue is that my mother's birthday falls right in that time. Now, she's had more birthdays than she can count on her fingers, so it's not like asking a child to wait, but depending on my husband, I may want to do something with her on The Day Itself.

Otherwise, I would like to meet a few people. {sigh} I think we need to do a MiddleMeeting. You know, everyone throw money into the pot, and then meet in the middle...

Naw, but it seems a shame that something as mundane as money keeps us from meeting in real life.

I'll post something once Mr X and I have talked.

I don't think I'm going. Not a lot of people are going. Some people I want to meet are not going. I'm going to save my money, maybe do something boring with it like buy GICs or something. LOL

I still want Bob's autograph though. Can someone get me Bob's autograph?

I'm thinking about it too. I wish this was the American Psychological Association convention. It is in SF in August - so much easier!!

Do we have a firm list of "yes" Babblers?

I just found out about something going on that Saturday/Sunday that I absolutely have to be home for.

So, I you'll have to count me out for the APA weekend.

Are these get-togethers just for you, Dr. Bob, and maybe the deputies and certain others? Or, are they for anyone?

If for anyone, is it usual to post the upcoming occasion on the social board? I've not noticed, if it has been on social.

They are for everyone. The admin board is where it's usually posted. There have been threads on the social board about the get togethers after they happened. There may have been some talking about them beforehand as well, but the primary source of info and planning is always here.

I'm jealous because I can't afford to go. :( I don't know any details anyone has come up with yet. Usually someone periodically takes a headcount of who all is going. As it gets closer, they start to talk about specific dates and what they'll do there. I went to the one in Chicago a couple of years ago. Dr. Bob created a listserv just for folks who were going to that one so we could talk about specific plans and still feel safe about disclosing personal info and specific locations/times, etc. I believe he did the same for last year's trip as well. As far as I know, that hasn't happened for this one yet.

Maybe someone could take a headcount to see where things stand?

That's a good idea, where do things stand? I haven't been around -- sorry about that -- but I'm still looking forward to getting together with some Babblers!

I am definitely 'thinking about it'!

I live two driving hours away.

Unfortunately, I've only been there once and it was quite a long time ago.

I'm not sure which post above gives the correct information re: dates and place to meet, etc., but I may have missed some emails.

I've been 'under the weather' and have had some fear of getting online re: 'unhealthy messages from family'. But, as I think back upon prior Aprils in my life, they've always tended to be difficult for me.(?)

Someone could write to the Chamber of Commerce re: a pkg rate at a decent hotel or motel.

I would probably drive, enabling me to p/u anyone, two, three, or four, from airport. (FYI -Have a decent car, license, insurance, AAA, abide w/ seatbelt laws, drive carefully, might take a wrong turn here or there but what would life be like if we didn't get lost once in a while .. ha, oh but here's the bad part, I'm a smoker.)

I'll follow thread along now and go back upwards reading them these next days. It gets confusing when suddenly I realize I'm reading a post from 2005 or 2006!

Glad you're back Dr. Bob! Missed you!

5f

ps: If deputies hooked me up in thread, I appreciate it. Thanks!

Just had a thought ...

If any1 would find flying into Sky Har*or in P*oenix less expensive, I could pick you up and you could ride w/ me to SD.

Use babble feature, or here, if this sounds like a plan which might help someone.

ps: Don't hate me 'cuz I smoke :( .. hope I'm not the only one!
