***So like we supposed to rephrase the BIBLE? GAAAAACK!
This is an ancient text.
Very very ancient.
So like, we not allowed to quote stuff out of the Koran either?
Or nay Buddist texts either?
HUH??????????
BURN the books I say.
Yeah, I find this a huge sticking point in the bible.
Sucks, totally.
Dunno WTF to make of that statement.
But it IS a part of Christian religion.
I truly DO NOT understand WHY you please rephrased that post unless you playing some weird game.
The post IS NOT putting down the beleifs of others.
This is a part of Christianity. This post proly only puts down Christians, not others.
I DON"T GET THIS BLOCK AT ALL.
Please explain.

Hi muffled,

I can understand your confusion. I think that when someone posts material from the books you mention, it is sticky if the material is not something that is considered within the civility guidelines. You're right, you really can't rephrase the quote itself. Some folks choose to retract or apologize. Some folks substitute their own words to make their point (of course only if they are civil) or use another verse. In this case, the poster did not respond, hence the block. (My own personal rule of thumb is to avoid quoting or linking to scripture of any kind, but that's just how I handle it.)

The reason the verse quoted could be viewed as putting down the beliefs of other religions is because it states salvation (or its equivalent or corrolary) can *only* be found one way. Others may and do believe differently.

As a hypothetical, and admittedly controversial example, if I were to say that the only way someone could be a "true" parent is if they raise children conceived within a marriage between a man and a woman, wouldn't that put down those who pursue parenthood in other situations? (And for the record, I'd never say that as I don't believe it.)

Hope that helps,

gg

In my research and thought about this rule when I was involved in a conversation about it before, I had a chance to dig into it. It is difficult.

I think ---- You can say you are a Christian.

I think ----You can say "It is part of the belief system of many Christians that Jesus is the only way to Salvation, some Christians believe differently, and most other religions believe completely differently, for instance, the Jews." (maybe)

I think --- You can't say, or quote "Jesus is the only way to salvation"

That's is the simplest I've been able to break down the concepts in the various rules at play on the faith board. And I'm not sure if The Faith board is a special case with more or less restrictive rules than the other boards (particularly Admin).

Its one thing to say what you believe, but another thing to dictate it to others in a way that may intrinsically bashes their own beliefs.

Jesus is the only way

vs.

My religion believes that Jesus is the only way.

The former indirectly tells all other people that their religions are wrong. Even though this is what you may believe, thats not what the board is about. The latter lets people know about your religious beliefs without insulting others'.
