increase or stop Nardil...cognitive crap

Posted by porkpiehat on September 21, 2018, at 7:52:06

Had to switch to Nardil recently after Marplan shortage. I haven't gone up past 45mgs because the cognitive/verbal problems and serious feelings of emotional detachment.

The depression is getting worse and so is the detachment. Suicidal obsessions more regularly. I am considering entering the hospital fo wash out but that has serious consequences.

Common sense says increase your Nardil before stopping but the hallmark of all the MAOI's for me is feeling more detached and demotivated especially after I take it. The detachment causes even more depression.

I take .25 klonopin at night; 50-100mgs gabapentin at night; 100mg lamictal AM; and space my nardil throughout the day. I need to take ritalin or modafinil everyday for mental clarity and wakefulness, motivation. Are these other meds enough to add to the cognitive and verbal problems on Nardil that I didn't have on Parnate and Marplan? Two have some GABA activity, and Lamictal can either make me racy or downright stupid.

If I had some indication that I could increase the Nardil without worsening side effects that could help with decision...any thoughts? TIA

I'm sorry that I can't answer your questions but curious if you've called Validus recently to see if there is an update on Marplan?

I called about a month ago and was told almost definitely by the end of the year.

Like you Nardil is not providing the relief I had hoped.

Hi guys.

I hope that you are able to get Marplan again soon. I have a few questions:

1. What dosage of Marplan worked best for you?

2. How long did it take to work?

3. What side effects did you experience?

4. Were you taking any other medications?

Thanks. I would really appreciate your input.

what dosage of Nardil? What are the symptoms you are still experiencing?

Not sure how much I want to go back to Marplan. The higher my dose, the more I experienced anger and frustration, along with strange "something is wrong" paranoia. I think compulsive activity was worse. Personally

Drinking WAY worse on Nardil, as is the constant stickyness and night sweats that are reminiscent of SSRIs. Sex drive and orgasms way better on Nardil, maybe because I'm not at 60 or above. I wake up fairly unmotivated and blah, but ultimately overdriven. I spend more nights/weekends at home watching movies. Hard to tell if is less "hypomanic" or just untreated depression.

In all cases I've been terribly disturbed by the feeling of alienation from people I've had on all the MAOIs. I don't like the person I have become. This and the more regular depression have me considering the hospital for a washout if it can be approved by insurance. Grass is greener man.

I couldn't stay at 40mgs due to irritability

hard to tell because I did a hot switch from Parnate

Irritability, compulsiveness, fear/nervousness, serious detachment from people and responsibilities. I suspect the alienation and detachment is either from the DA/NE or I've heard this can be a hypomanic reaction. Felt dulled on celexa/prozac but never this degree of weird detachment. I did on zoloft and effexor .

Lamictal (100mg) Klonopin (.25 mgs), ritalin (3-5mg) or modafinil (50mg) for tiredness; gabapentin (100mgs)and/or trazodone 25mg; HIV medication; prilosec; propranolol as needed (5 mgs); tried buproprion instead of the above stims occasionally, didn't work so well.
