And two to five courses of antibiotics raise the risk for depression by nearly half! Antibiotics are a double-edged sword, killing both harmful and beneficial bacteria.

When I'm on antibiotics, I take Florastor, a probiotic that isn't killed by antibiotics. When I've finished my course of antibiotics, I take Culturelle for about a month. I also take a prebiotic for a while. I like GOS a lot more than FOS.

Absolutely! This is a fact as far as I am concerned.

And it has a very comprehensive detailed scientific explanation as to why that happens.

The phenomenon even has a name. It is called a Herxheimer reaction. Unfortunately, most scientists and psychiatrist don't really know what that is or how it ties into their patients.

These studies are misleading.
1. They suggest you should avoid antibiotics if you are prone to depression - where in fact it is the need for antibiotics to end being prone to depression.
2. They seem to have no knowledge whatsoever of the direct and spectacular link between infections and mood, and no education whatsoever of what a Herxheimer is. Without any of that, these studies send the reader off into la-la land of myths and false extrapolations.
3. They totally avoid making the obvious link - if you take antibiotics and you get depressed that IS DIAGNOSTIC For LYME. That is actually one of the better screening tests out there. It is a common validating tactic, or confirmation tactic. If a doctor suspects lyme but the tests are negative, one course of antibiotics is all it requires to rule in or rule out the suspicion, based upon what happens.

It's all quite fascinating when you know in detail what is actually h happening behind the curtains. But it is also terrifying to realize that the professionals we rely on and trust to know this stuff, well, most of them don't. That is scary.

imo

Been years since had to take an antibiotic. But when I do I feel l00% better the next day definitely not depressed never in my life has any antibiotic caused me to be depressed. I guess cause anxiety is my diagnosis and I stand by that. If I ever had lymes which doubt. It did not cause any depression in me. Phillipa

LLMDs give suspected lyme patients a trial of antibiotics to see what happens. It is a great diagnostic tool. More accurate than testing.

When a lyme patient takes an antibiotic, within 1 to 5 days they feel much better. Exactly like you described.

The anxiety involved is usually due to Bartonella not Borellia.

Bartonella has multiple sources - not just ticks.

FYI

So do you have to be on an antibiotic indefinitely? Its kind of hard to believe that i carry an infection and my body cant get rid of it. But once you have taken the antibiotic it can?
