Emsam + insurance

Posted by pedr on September 17, 2017, at 13:43:03

Hi, has anyone had Emsam be "non formulary" (i.e. not covered) by their insurance and successfully filed an "prior authorisation"? I really want to try it but don't want to pay ~ $1,700
/month...

FTR I've tried every med and treatment in the book, if that counts any.

Thanks, Pete

I have not.

However, if you respond to Emsam, there may be a case for you to try oral selegeline.

Emsam is simply selegiline in patch form. Generic selegiline is probably very inexpensive. It is used for parkinsons.

The only difference is that you may need to adhere to a tyramine free diet.

Thanks for this Linkadge. My PDoc's opinion is that I might as well try Parnate and he might be right. It's just that forgoing all meds for 2 weeks AND being under-dosed for N further weeks (as you titrate off my current meds and onto Parnate) frankly terrifies me.

I wouldn't worry too much. You may be able to find something to tide you over.

Tryptophan is most likely ok to take between treatments (if it helps). There are many studies of tryptophan + MAOI.
