increase lamictal w/ trileptal?

Posted by Christ_empowered on May 12, 2016, at 21:00:10

I take: 1200/trileptal, 100/lamictal, 30/abilify, and 400/wellbutrin. I mean, that's more meds than I'd like, but..it works, quite well.

Only problem is I have some residual low mood stuff, despite the wellbutrin and lamictal (the abilify could be helping, too, but I was under the impression that @ 30mgs it was more anti-manic/anti-psychotic than anything else...).

Do you think going to 150 or 200 on the lamictal might be a good idea? Thing is...when trileptal was added to the abilify, I was tired for a while. Then the lamictal was added to the abilify and trileptal, and I was less depressed, but had cognitive problems and sedation. So, enter Wellbutrin SR, which has been a godsend.

Point is, I don't want sedation and/or cognitive problems. I also don't want to add in a 5th daily med for depression, especially since SSRI meds don't do it for me over the long haul.

The depression and everything else is vastly improved on meds. This isn't a crisis situation by any means. I'm just wondering...well, I'm wondering if there's a way to go from "good response" to "remission."

I wish I had an answer. I'm having a bumpy road with 200mg lamictal. Was up for a few days, pretty far down for a few more, now cheering up again. I'm curious though, what kind of cognitive problems did you have? I'm not sure I'd recognize them compared to the usual middle-aged-brain stuff.

the cognitive issues....well, I just felt kinda un-smart. With the Trileptal, it was mostly sedation (rapid increase to 1200). When the lamictal was added, it was sedation (again) plus a zoned out feeling. Once the Wellbutrin was added and increased to 400, my concentration improved and the lingering sedation went away.

i was on 400mg lamotragine, i noticed it made me spaced out, but it did have an antidepressant effect but still the congtive problems where alot at 400mg

maybe just bump it to 200mg, thats usally a good for mood slumps or depression

also ask your doctor about adding prozac to your med list, because prozac works well with wellbutrin

Can you go up on the Wellbutrin? I know you don't want to add another med but what about a low dose stim like Ritalin?

Me too!

thanks for the input, everyone.

Stimulants are out, because its a public/community health clinic. Wellbutrin can be pushed to 450. I think there's a once daily xr in that strength. I'll have to ask.

The more I think about it...the more I think maybe "remission" won't come from an Rx for me. I'm not agitated, too moody, eating too much or too little, all that. I even have a reasonable amount of energy, probably because of Wellbutrin.

I wish I could get the Lamictal increased and drop the Trileptal. What I think happened is that my former shrink perceived my agitation as a (hypo)manic problem, when I think it was really just agitated depression. Happens. Unfortunately, my current doctor doesn't want to drop the trileptal or the lamictal, so I'm stuck on 2 anticonvulsants. Not the worst thing ever, but...not ideal, either. At least the Wellbutrin lifts my mood a bit and counters the sedation.

Thanks again for your replies.
