Zyprexa prn- Anyone ?

Posted by J Kelly on March 13, 2016, at 19:59:01

I notice that when I take my eve dose of Zyprexa a lot of my anxiety disappears. Ive always taken it at night as instructed by pdoc.

I'm wondering if it might help a troublesome daytime anxiety attack, as long as I'm not working etc.

I suppose it might just makes me sleepy. Any thoughts?

i've taken zyprexa at 20mg for 5 years, and before that when i started it, i was really irrtibile one day, and i took 15mg of olapzine and did notice a diffrence in my mood, calmer, in way zyprexa can be like a mild benzodiazepine, there's just sommething about it that calms things down, you feel stable

but maybe take like 5mg, because if you take 20mg during the day, it could sedate and make you wanna sleep, 5-10 during the day you could experiement and see if it's effective

Hi rj,

Actually Zyprexa feels like it works better than my klonopin for anxiety. It does make me sleepy so I'm gonna try 2.5mg or maybe 5mg the next time i'm having severe daytime anxiety/panic and see what happens. I'll have to make sure I don't have to "perform" in any way.

Just wondering if others feel this too.

Thanks,

At one point in time it was being over prescribed because it works so well with anxiety, i do think rx for zyprexa for anxiety alone is overkill (unless its the only thing that works for you). but thats just my thoughts.

how much are you on?
people can respond to as little as 2.5. once it is regular and in your system it should help on a daily basis as its half life is fairly long (i think around 2 days maybe).

with that said. i think that some 'attacks' need more of a fast acting/short half life thing. so while i think zyprexa is great for everyday anxity and it has worked well for me, i still need something else to take if an 'attack' kicks up.

the negative with using zyprexa is weight gain. for me when i dont have the issues of eating until i go to 10mg (which of course is normally what i need) or higher then eating occurs.

*****
part 2
i often take zyprexa prn, but for differnt reason. when i become acute mixed episode i have gone on it for 2weeks to month or so. then stop. it has worked well for that in the past.

Hi b2,

Oh I agree. I was prescribed Zyprexa for my hard to treat depression. I was surprised to find that it was working. The reduced anxiety was just a bonus.

I was taking 10mg every night. I gained 30 pounds and decided it wasn't really working so I weaned off it. I lost all the weight and more. But then I crashed hard. I'm back on it :(

My anxiety has been REALLY bad as of late. What do you recommend? I have klonopin .5mg 3x day but i'm wondering if another benzo would help my acute episodes better. Any ideas?

I added it back at 5mg but am still gaining weight.Ugh.

I have taken both risperdal and zyprexa on a pen basis for anxiety - derealization mostly. I've only taken it for a day or two, not long enough to cause weight gain.

I also routinely take abilify pen for a couple or weeks as an adjunct to parnate and lamictal if my depression becomes severe. It works, but makes me gain weight like crazy - not from eating more either. The only w/d's I have when I stop is that I stop gaining weight.

I've never heard of anyone taking Zyprexa prn. I want to try this but frankly I'm scared. I'm depressed and anxious while on Zyprexa, but I'm bed ridden without it.

I'm so sick of the Zyprexa weight gain. But I must admit for me its because my appetite gets crazy. When not on Zyprexa, my depression and anxiety cause me to rapidly lose weight. Almost anorexic. Lesser of two evils I guess.

I may add Lamictal at my next pdoc appt. Maybe Nardil down the road.

Thanks for your post.

I take zyprexa during the day. I split my daily dose into 3 doses. It does not hinder my performance at work in any way. Works better than taking it all at night. Less anxiety, a more consistant effect and easyer to wake up in morning. I some times take a bigger dose right before bed.

I also take a slightly prn of zyprexa. Some days I will take more or less. Depends on how tired I am, or anxious, or just how I feel in general. So I have 20mg pills I only take between 10-20mg a day.

When I took zyprexa all at night I would get super hungry a couple hours after. And gorge. Then sleep. Taking it 3 times a day I don't get hungry all at once and I can eat smaller meals, through out the day.

I cut the 20mg pills into 6 pieces. Usually if they are fresh. I will take one at breakfast one at lunch and 1-2 at bed. If they are 3 months old I will take more like 2 at breakfast, one at lunch and 2 at bed.

hello Jade

i'm a little loopy right now from ambien (which at 12:47am it still not really working)
so i hope my words come out right.

klonopin, xanax, and ativan are the typical benzo's. if you want to try something a little differnt i was on perphenazine for a while (very low dose i think 2mg? maybe cant remember for sure but it was low and for a while it worked very very well. no weight gain.
also, i'm on gabapentin right now for anxiety and it works great. i still have break through, but thats more when i start getting a mixed episode, so the anxiety is induced from that. i had a friend that was on 100mg about 3x a day and that worked great for her. i am on 300mg either 3-5x day depending.
the only bad thing about gaba is that for me it seems to take about 2 hours before i really feel an effect.

you asked "You dont have any w/d's taking it that way?"
do you mean withdrawls? no i do not. if i'm on ten then i taper to 5 for a day or so then stop. i've been off and on it for many years, easily start up and easily stop. have not ever had issues.
i will notice some let down for about a week. can worsen depression. i have also had a few mood bouce up after coming off it (which was always a blessing for me). but again it may last a week or so but then you are back to your normal symptoms.

b2

Thank you for these posts Zyprexa. I think I'm going to try this as it sounds like it can smooth out mood fluctuations throughout the day, and lessen food cravings (that would be awesome :)

I'm gonna google perphenazine now. I have had Neurontin and Lyrica in the back of my mind for a while. I will add these three meds to my "maybe?" list.

Interesting. This scares me but maybe I should give it a try. The weight gain IS a problem for me.

Who doesn't like a good "mood bounce up" once in a while? :)

Thanks for your responses, they help.

i do want to note that i believe my ability to go on and off zyprexa easily is not typical.. i have heard some folks have trouble, i do not suggest going up or down to quickly. you should take 1-2 weeks to go off the med.
if at 10 you can go to 7.5 or down to 5mg then down to 2.5.
if you notice negative effects i suggest not giving up but tapering more slowly (going up as well) .

so if you go to 10 and it say you get weird reaction (i once had tongue swelling when went up too quickly) i just went back to 5 for a couple more days then went up to 10
best of luck.

No worries b2, I always know my mileage may vary.

I'm currently taking 5mg at night and am considering splitting that into 2.5mg during the day and 2.5mg at night. Then maybe drop to 2.5mg at night only. I'll just have to see how it goes.
