Replacement for respiridone

Posted by lois on September 1, 2015, at 13:27:11

Respiridone was my wonder drug for 3 and 1/2 years, but after having liver enzymes elevate from a bladder med, it didn't work any more.
Is there anything besides Abilify or Latuda that can have a similar effect as respiridone?

Am on Cymbalta 120 mgs and Lamictal 200mgs for BP Depression. Coming off Latuda due to heavy sweating and not sure it's working at the highest dose I could stand.(60mgs).
Also have tried about all sleep meds. I am either agitated or foggy. Respiridone really cleared things up and gave me motivation.
Any ideas?

Hi Lois.

> Is there anything besides Abilify or Latuda that can have a similar effect as respiridone?

Just a few questions:

Precisely what effects are you looking for?

How do you know that Abilify or Latuda would produce these effects?

Why do you wish to avoid these two drugs?

There's Invega, which is the active metabolite of Risperidone. It won't process in the liver the same way Risperidone does.

The effects I am looking for are the ones I got with respiridone : motivation and a clearing of the head.
Abilify didn't work for me and Latuda made me perspire a lot.

I am wondering about other anti-psychotics that might be related to, or similar to respiridone.
I think I am looking for ones that work on Dopamine.

Eric,

Thanks. I'll suggest that to my Dr. I was also wondering about Geoden and a couple of others that end in "done".

Invega

>I think I am looking for ones that work on Dopamine.

All antipsychotics antagonize dopamine, except for Abilify which acts as a partial agonist at the D2 receptor.

>motivation and a clearing of the head.

I'm surprised Latuda and Abilify did not motivate you.

What other medications are you on?

Risperidone and Ziprasidone are the two that end in 'done'. Though they may end in 'done', the two medications are very different from each other.

Ziprasidone is also called Geodon. Geodon is an antipsychotic and an antidepressant combined. The antidepressant part of Geodon is supposed to give you motivation while the antipsychotic part clears your head.

I am on Cymbalta and Lamictal. Was on Trazodone for sleep and clonazepam for a stabilizer and sleep. Now am off those 2 because I got brain fog. So now I don't sleep but still have 'some' fog left.

I wonder if one can take Geodon with Cymbalta (120 mgs) or if that would be too many anti-depressants?

Be aware that Lamictal can be responsible for brain fog too! I also find it reacts differently when taken with certain AD's. It's pretty bad for me!

I've heard that Geodon at lower doses works very similarly to Cymbalta. Maybe Scott or Eric can chime in here

Hummmmm. I've been on Lamictal forever.I wonder if Geodon can take the place of it as well as the Cymbalta. I wouldn't want to over do the antidepressants, but would like to be on enough. Does Geodon present problems with being too hot or too cold? The Latuda has - that's why I'm coming off of it without going up to a therapeutic dose.
I am under the impression that I need 2 stablizers. We'll see. I see the Dr. next week. I wonder which AD's Lamictal should not be given with.....

I don't know that there are any AD's that "shouldn't" go with Lamictal, I'm just saying it's different for me. When I take it alone I feel dull and "stabilized" when I take with Celexa at more than 15mgs it has its own racy antidepressant effect.

Why do you think you need two stabilizers?

I take Lamictal with Clymbalta. I was on clonazepam for anxiety, sleep, and mood stabilizer - I was told. Maybe it's not a stablizer, I don't know.I am on Lamictal. Since I was on supposedly 2 stablizers I think I need 2. I guess it depends on how 1 alone does.

Clonazepam is not much of a stabilizer.

Gabitril is a great sleep med that won't cause brain fog. 4-12 mgs at night,

I've taken 160 mg of Geodon with 160 mgs of Cymbalta with no problems.

I would not replace the lamictal with the Geodon-it is not a mood stabilizer. When you're bipolar you want to be on a mood stabilizer then add things like antidepressants and antipsychotics to further treat remaining depressive and manic symptoms.

About being too hot or cold-you may or may not be on the geodon, however it seems to be a rare side effect of Geodon.

You dont necessarily need to be on 2 mood stabilizers unless your mood is still uneven on just one.

Most ADs can be given with Lamictal.

You really weren't on 2 mood stabilizers, so I don't think you need 2. Sometimes being on two mood stabilizers can improve depressive symptoms, but with clonazepam, the risk of depression is increased.

What are your main concerns? What main problems are you having?

I thought 120 mgs was the most cymbalta you could take.(?)

I hope to stay on the cymbalta and lamictal and replace the respiridone with either another try of it, or another AP. But might ask about Gabitril for sleep. Unless one can't be on G if on AD's.

Are respiridone and other AP's activating or sedating? They had me on respiridone at bedtime. I wonder if taking any AP's in the day would help me sleep better? I went off the respiridone in July. I wonder if it's too soon to try it again. It may not have the same effect anyway because I was also on clonazepam then. (?)
Thx.

No, you can push it up to 200 mg if you really need to...Patients who have OCD may take 240 mg of the drug.

120 mg is adequate for the treatment of bipolar depression...You won't need to go higher.

How much Lamictal do you take?

Keeping the Cymbalta and the Lamictal then adding either Invega or Geodon for motivation and clearheadedness is a good route to take. How much Lamictal do you take?

Different APs can be activating or sedating. Risperidone is usually on the sedating side. It should help you sleep.

>I wonder if taking any AP's in the day would help me sleep better?

It would definitely help if you decided to take Geodon. If you go with Invega it won't matter when you take it.

Why did you go off the risperidone?
