Viibryd in Europe

Posted by jkl77 on May 15, 2015, at 16:53:27

Viibryd was approved by FDA more than four years ago. It is still not available in my home country, Sweden. Isn´t it available in any europe country?

The approval of new drugs is done by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for all member states of the European Union, including Sweden. Vilazodone has not been approved by the EMA, and I wasn't even able to find information as to why not or whether an approval is sought by the patent holder.

However, most countries allow the importation of medicines from other countries under certain circumstances. This usually involves a bit of paperwork, but it can be done.

I hope this helps!

ER

But I forgot to mention, vortioxetine (Brintellix) has been approved by the EMA and is already available in some European countries. The other countries will probably soon follow.

I'm not familiar with the exact pharmacology of vilazodone (Viibryd) and vortioxetine, so I can't compare the two, but they are both multimodal serotonergic agents. If you think that you might benefit from vilazodone, looking into vortioxetine may be a good idea.

Yeah, based on what I've heard and read, it doesn't seem to be a smashing success. I don't recall any poster here on PB who has had real success with it, and I remember reading that even its touted side effect profile is less good than was suggested before it was released.

Maybe it's more of a new first-line drug, with slim (if any) advantages for treatment-resistant patients.

In the US it is the third most popular antidepressant. More popular than all the SSRI:s. http://mentalhealthdaily.com/2014/08/30/most-popular-antidepressants-in-2014-cymbalta-pristiq-viibryd/

Well, that ranking is based on the number of prescriptions per year. That number alone really says more about marketing than about the efficacy of the drug. Many people would consider MAOIs the gold standard for depression treatment, yet they rank very low in prescriptions per year.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to bash vilazodone, I certainly don't know enough about it to make a qualified evaluation.
