African Americans and psychiatry

Posted by Phil on May 5, 2015, at 18:43:24

After 30+ years of seeing psychiatrists, I can't recall seeing a black person in a waiting room. I'm sure that my memory isn't the greatest and there have been some but it's hardly a regular occurrence. My doctors have all been in San Antonio or Austin..urban areas.
I have seen more black celebs, entertainers, athletes etc coming out as having a mental illness which I think is sorely needed.
Anyone have a comment on this? What's your experience?

What about East Asians, South Asians, Southeast Asians, Hispanics, and those from what we in North America call the Middle East being commonly found in psychiatrist and psychologist waiting rooms? In fact, what about any non-WASP ethnic or religious group coming to visit, what, until recently, were mostly Anglo and Jewish psychologists and psychiatrists? The most obvious reason for me is that psychiatry and psychology are hardly "objective" professions, but tied culturally to western Enlightenment thinking, to lapsed Protestant Christianity and Judaism, to what happened in Europe and North America after the Reformation, and to how many Europeans and European Americans view selfhood and individuality. And certainly there is the affordability factor. I mean, god knows psychology and psychiatry are hardly tied to one's income level, right? Right?

Right. Many reasons. Many races.

Minorities who go to shrinks are often over-diagnosed with psychotic disorders. More of them are given AP/AAP drugs, and at higher doses. A lot of this is socioeconomic...lower socioeconomic status overlaps with many minority groups, so I think its hard to separate what is drugging up poor people and what is drugging up minorities, specifically, but...

...yeah. Psychiatry can be helpful, but I think all too often they treat social issues as "illness." For instance...poor, bad childhood, abuse, legal problems, substance abuse? You're now...schizoaffective, or something like that. White, more affluent, same problems? Bipolar I. See what I'm saying?

I have seen African Americans numerous times in the waiting room in USA. My experience with Asian's and mental illness is just as prevalent there if not more so but they less motivated to get help to save "face" or pride. When they do get help often they visit a "Neurologist" (because it doesn't sound as bad?) Asian societies don't have the kind of stress of west. If someone has social anxiety they are labeled as "shy" not "psycho." Many Asians develop anxiety, depression after relocating to USA dealing with different respect values with a culture there that is hyper-masculine, homophobic, aggressive and disrespectful to elderly.
